Nervous... I get confused about all this but am using the 3400 mah batteries in my sid... Is that safe?
Welcome to Hoosier E-Cig - The Best E-cigs, Juices, and accesories
They would be "safe" and will "work" in your SID, but they are not the ideal battery to use in a regulated mod like the SID. They reason why is slightly complicated and is explained in this question/response from the Provape engineers who make the Provari. While reading the below response, substitute "SID" for Provari.

"There are four (4) aspects of the battery and its use that need to be understood and factored in for this discussion. They are:

1) The maximum continuous discharge rate specification of the cell
2) The internal resistance of the cell
3) The application of the cell
4) The cell lithium ion chemistry

The cell ratings are based on a continuous discharge. The application is intermittent duty, by its nature not continuous, so a cell can be intermittently be pushed somewhat harder than its continuous rating in this type of application. The Provari when supplying its maximum output power (14.5 Watts) will need to draw a maximum average current from the cell of 5.2 amps. While it is true that the pulse current can be as high as 9 amps, the duration of these pulse currents is less than 10 microseconds and is not as important as the total average current drawn.

The 5.2 amps is when the cell is at end of charge and the output is adjusted to maximum power out, so it is an absolute worst case situation.

This situation is important because any manufacturer of a high quality device needs to account for the worst case conditions his product will be exposed to in its application.

When compared to the 6 amp continuous rating of the AW18350 cell it passes with some acceptable margin. The AW18490 and AW18650 have even better margins.

BUT just as important, is the safer lithium ion chemistry and very low internal resistance of the AW cells. Other lithium-ion chemistry and higher internal resistance cells will not perform to the level of the AW cells and therefore reduce the overall experience when used. The cost of these other cells when comparing their performance and safety are just not worth it.

There are cells that claim to have the same or better capacity as the AW cell BUT their internal resistance is inferior. If the cell has a higher internal resistance it will drop more voltage when current is taken out and as a result the ProVari will indicate it is at end of charge when it could have a significant amount of capacity remaining.

What good is this capacity if it cannot be utilized by the ProVari? It is of NO use, so why use it?

In short, your Panasonic 3400mAh batteries have a very high internal resistance compared to other batteries in this class; this is why they have such a high mAh capacity. They are a hybrid battery with the chemistry weighted heavily to the ICR end of the spectrum, and not considered a high drain battery. They have a lower continuous discharge rating (6.8 amps) than most other IMR/hybrid batteries (10 amps).

In a regulated mod like your SID, these batteries will drop more voltage when current is taken out because of their high internal resistance, resulting in the SID indicating it is at the end of charge when it has a significant amount of capacity remaining. You will not get the best use out of your SID using these batteries, and you will not be getting the best use out of the batteries either. These batteries are best used for something like a flashlight or camera.

One more question. I see these are 'button top' will those work in my sid or is there a flat top version?
The best "general purpose" battery on the market are the Panasonic / Orbtronic NCR18650PD or NCR18650PF 2900mAh hybrid batteries. The Orbtronics (black & silver) are the same cell as the Panny's (lime green), just in a different wrapper.

Go with the pannys if you want something that is a general guideline for all regulated mods.

On a side note, what do you vape with baditude?
I use almost exclusively AW IMR batteries in both my regulated and mechanical mods.

I have a single CGR18650CH (grey IMR/hybrid) 2250mAh which I purchased to compare to my usual AW IMR 18650 2000mah; despite the higher mAh of the Panny it lasts only as long as the AW's.

I've tried a couple of the Efest 18350 IMR 800mAh to compare to my usual AW 18350 IMR 700mAh; they compared favorably for about two weeks and then dropped their run time by about 30% and are now sitting in a drawer.

Same thing happened to my daughter who was using AW 14500 IMR batteries in her little mechanicals; about two weeks after try the Efest brand they dropped their run time and I gave her the AW 14500 IMR's which I had and was no longer using. Not a fan of Efest batteries.
