UC Riverside "study" spreads; Phillip McAndrew "hit job" piece from Loyola Sch. Med. appears to be getting very little traction; more on the EU letter; possible softening of ALA stance (see OR US story). Shasta Co. CA US is now distributing "hit job" lit. to (who?). ANTZ in OR join those in other states in opposing minor bans on the grounds that they don't go far enough - but danger of "minor morph" in OR may be limited or even non-existent.

Coverage: EU; Italy; US States: MA; DC; NC, OH; KY; IN; IL; CO; OR; CA

Spreading ...

Some of you may recall the hit job "study" - if it really can be called a "study" - in which two cheap all-in-ones were analyzed at UC Riverside discussed here: www . 10news . com/news/investigations/e-cigarettes-under-fire-by-critics-team-10-tests-the-vapor-01292014 [local SD CA US ABC affiliate] and also by Gary Cox on ECF InfoZOne: California study finds only healthful chemicals in e-cig vapor! - ECF InfoZone

This is now spreading to other ABC affiliates verbatim www . thedenverchannel . com/news/investigation-reveals-e-cigarette-smokers-may-inhale-metal-no-federal-regulation-of-vaping01312014 [Denver CO US ABC Affiliate]

Spreading, but not much ...

The Phillip McAndrew hit job piece from Loyola Sch. of Med. isn't spreading as fast as I'd thought:

(OR US PBS web site) www . opb . org/news/article/npr-oregon-considers-measure-to-limit-e-cigarette-access/ [review of legislation pending in OR, seems to imply that the proposed minor ban is unlikely to "morph" into more; also very interesting because of some unexpectedly mild statments from the ALA. We're also seeing the same thing that's been noted here: Minors, Money, and Misinformation - ECF InfoZone which is that ANTZ orgs are actually opposing simple minor bans (also see OH, NE, OK):
But the idea [of a simple ban on sales to minors] is running into some opposition from some groups you might not expect: The American Lung Association. They certainly support a ban on selling e-cigarettes to kids. So why the hesitation?

"I just think until we know more about what it does to lung health and what it does to public health, I think we just need to be very, very careful about any legislation that we pass around e-cigarettes," says Carrie Nyssen, regional director of advocacy for the American Lung Association.

Unlike tobacco products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate e-cigarettes. The agency is studying the issue but for now says the risk of using them is unknown.

But that uncertainty isn’t why the Lung Association and other public health groups including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids are balking at e-cigarette legislation in Oregon and other states. Instead, they’re concerned that the bills define the products as something entirely separate from regular cigarettes.

(Shasta Co. CA US Co. web site) www . co . shasta.ca.us/HHSA/Professionals/ENDS.sflb.ashx [what's disturbing about this PDF is that it's a "hit job" produced by a gov't. I believe HHSA is a ref. to "Health and Human Services Agency," and there are several such local entities around the country. I strongly suspect this is the one in San Diego CA. This PDF appears to be in a pamphlet designed for distribution to (who?). Note that this link will fail without the "http://" portion.]
