Stan Glantz sent out the following announcement for an event at UCSF on February 3, 2012 that includes a presentation by Rachel Grana on e-cigarettes. Rachel is one of Stan's post doctoral students (i.e. one of Stan's slaves) who coauthored the outrageous comments Stan submitted to the US DOT urging an e-cig usage ban on airplanes at DOT should prohibit use of e-cigs on airplanes (our public comment) | Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education

It would be helpful if some vapers from the San Francisco area attended this event, challenged some of Grana's claims, and taught her and others about e-cigarettes (perhaps including a demonstration on their usage).

Grana was on a 90 minute webinar about e-cigarettes that went up a few weeks ago. The webinar can be watched here. She mentioned ECF and CASAA, but they were both cursory, 20 second bits.

She's certainly more intelligent and knowledgeable than Random Iowa Health Department Official #16, but considering she's a postdoc student, I expected someone more thorough.

I can never figure out why they keep tweaking about flavors. So what? Who cares? Many of the FDA approved cessation aids come in flavors too. Scheesch. Most of the things we put in our mouths come in flavors--it's pretty standard.

Thanks, Placebo Effect, for getting these FOIA emails for us.

The antis are diametrically opposed to flavors because they make the experience more enjoyable. This applies to cigarettes or e-cigarettes. In this regard, use of 'the children' is a rather cunning piece of camouflage. I don't think they actually care about that aspect at all.

It's not possible for them to come right out and say, "We want to make the whole experience as unpleasant as possible, so that smokers (and e-cig users) get less enjoyment from it and are more likely to quit". They would then be seen for what they really are: moralistic killjoys with absolutely no interest in saving life.

Just as the prohibitionists who poisoned thousands during Prohibition were reported as saying, "So what?", or the equivalent, when asked how they felt about people dying due to officially-poisoned alcohol, so today's prohibitionists are uninterested in saving or protecting life. It's all about the idealogy - no one is allowed to enjoy themselves or ingest anything apart from carrots and spring water. They are the New Puritans, whether they admit it or not. Life is designed to be long, hard, and without respite.

Greg, I'm sorry but you will have to remove those emails. We don't allow correspondence to be published without permission.

Perhaps you could compile them into a PDF, upload it somewhere, and link to it.

Thank you.

The fact that they're government employees whose e-mails were legally acquired through a FOIA request doesn't change anything?

Your house, your rules. I removed them.

Greg,

If you haven't already done so, please e-mail the documents (that ECF won't let you post) to me. If there's potentially impacful information on them, I'll send them out to my e-mail list.

It's unfortunate that the UK doesn't have the 1st Amendment and public disclosure laws that we enjoy in the US.

It's not really that, Bill. Our legal situation is complex due to various geographical issues.

It's more that we don't want people posting any private correspondence of any kind here, mainly for good manners, also to avoid problems. The thing is, you can't allow one person to do it, but not another. When people see it done, they all do it. We would not allow someone to publish private correspondence of yours here, and we extend that privilege to all, as a matter of course.

Emails can easily be compiled into a file and uploaded to a dropbox and linked to.

Another thing is that we don't want to be seen as a sort of Wikileaks resource, where original, private material is published and causes problems for others. There are bound to be those who would like to see us go away, so we don't want to make that any easier to accomplish.
