I had the same problem, and what worked was to switch brands. Not just to get away from the 'preferred' cigarette, but also to lower the nic/tar/whatever else is in there.
If you smoke lights, switch down to ultra lights. If you smoke ultra lights, switch down to super ultra lights (they're not called that, but they make them), and the extremely weak extra-super ultra lights.
It sounds tough to give up that particular brand we smoke, but if you're gonna quit anyway.... what difference does it make?
I can tell you that if you live in America, it will be hard to locate anything lighter than the average ultra-light. They just don't seem to sell well, however, whether by public preference or by decree, these cigarettes are manufactured in Europe. Actually, if you can find Carlton's in America, they would qualify as extremely light, but you must check them because Carlton now makes cigs with various levels of nic/tar.
Anyway, if dropping to extra light cigs sounds intresting, do a little reasearch on the internet. There are web sites that will ship duty-free smokes from Europe (unless/until the PACT act is passed). Virginia Slim makes 'Virginia Slim Blue' (.3nic/3tar) and 'Virginia Slim White/Uno' (.1nic/1tar). I bought several cartons of each and worked myself down to the Whites before quitting analogs.
Edit: Gave wrong information, the .1nic/1tar cigs aren't whites or Unos (the Unos are actually pretty strong). I checked my stash and they are:
Virginia Slims Premium Blue, and, Virginia Slim Premium One. I actually have quite a few packs of both left, and would be glad to mail them in exchange for postage cost.
