Hi Dave, hang in there. Everyone here is giving you good advice on the hardware, I can do nothing but agree with the choices put out. I am about two months in (and 1542 cigs not smoked). I would also agree with everyone here, that you may need to try a higher nic level at the start, to get over the heebie jeebies. It takes our bodies about 72 hours to detox from all the other stuff in cigs.
The taste is highly subjective, the only hard advice I can give you is to not get big bottles of anything at first. It's bad to be stuck with a lot of something you decided you don't like! Pay the extra couple of bucks shipping to make multiple small orders at first.
This can work for you, it sounds like you really want to quit, which is a big help!
I was a menthol smoker for 35 years. I dabbled through several flavors, and once I got my taste back, I enjoyed several fruity ones. I tried several menthol ones, but my favorite menthol was from Liberty Flights. They have a juice (available in both
a PG version and
a VG version) called Menthol Blend. It retains a tiny bit of tobacco smell (which is a big part of flavor), which may or may not be good for you. Many of the straight menthol ones tasted more like gum (which is still a better taste than cigs!). Check those links, Liberty Flights has the menthol listed under "Other Flavors".
The VG one hints that it was based on the taste of Newports, but again that is very highly subjective. With the lack of combustion and breathing fire byproducts, none of them will really taste like a cig. Which is a good thing, soon you won't want it to.
Don't feel like you failed if you smoke a cigarette! Many other ways of quitting smoking eventually come down to "The
Cold Turkey Moment". You can never smoke again. You have not smoked for X amount of hours/days/months/years. You're staring at forever ahead of you, and all you want is just one more. Sometimes you bargain with yourself. "Self, I can just smoke one more. I will sit very still, and pay attention to it very intensely. I could put on some of my favorite music and have a nice snack, and smoke my last cigarette after I eat. I will enjoy it, and then wisely say goodbye to it forever". If you smoke that one more, it *then* seems that you have failed. You have lost the battle, and have to start all over. All your work and pain looks like it was wasted.
It's not like that with e-cigs. Many (myself included) would still smoke a few while learning the process. For me, I have a 15 minute drive to work, and that was traditionally my first smoke of the day. For the first week, I would still smoke two in the morning, then I could concentrate on getting the PV stuff lined up to work reliably the rest of the day.
The important thing is that you seem to have the right mindset. As mentioned, keep spending time here at ECF, there is years of experience here, that helped me a lot.
Good luck, you can do it! ~scott s.
