I've put together a 5 volt "mod box" that uses rechargeable double AA's, just a basic battery box from radio shack for two bucks with a momentary switch rated for 2 amps molded into some empty space in the box with JB Weld painted black with Sharpie.
The battery connector, where the 510 atomizer screws in, was hack-sawed off a dead battery

Video's of it's use:
YouTube - 4*AA Mod Box 3 Second Hits
YouTube - HV PV 4*AA E-Cigarette
4*AA's (~5.5 volts)
$2 battery box
$4 switch
battery connector hack-sawed off a dead 510 battery
Joye 510 atomizer, 3.2 ohms, $7
this is what they call high voltage, and it really burns the flavor and tastes bad if I leave it on for more than a few seconds, but just letting it heat up for a sec then taking a quick two or three second hit, and releasing the trigger just before i stop drawing, produces an exhale volume similar to a cigarette, and taking it in is pretty close too. the vapor is much warmer than the mini-cigarette battery, but that was a respectable 3.82 volts - i could run a low resistance atty with that i guess, but it only lasts one or two vaping sessions.
this is just so much better than the $24 rig i bought, so much closer to a cigarette on what i guess they call throat hit, and i've even grown away from wanting the tobacco flavors, running out of my sample of mango, everything i liked about a cigarette without the parts i didn't like...i find i want to vape much longer than i want to smoke, so i guess i have to get lower potency stuff next time.
I had sized this atomizer to 4.5 volts, but it hits so much better at 5 volts.

I was hoping for 4.8 volts total, but found something different...

on a fresh charge it reads 5.7 volts, which is why i posted ~5.5 v

~ this obviously belongs in the kiddy corner of the mod forum, but as a ghetto vape, it's more like a cigarette than I could have believed after the cheap liquor store model i started with.

thanks, and it sucks that i can't post anywhere but here...like i'm not good enough to talk to real people until i develop from a Fungus into a Lichen....which takes quite a while if you're a fungus that doesn't like to talk. I don't think I'll stay, just leach once in a while. The Hoops Are Too High.

Lol just one more post and you can go anywhere you want. It's a little bit of a pain, but not nearly as much as all the spammers would be if the rule wasn't in place. As it is, they still have to boot out a couple of supplier wannabes every day.

Wow, so the NiMHs run higher huh? Excellent! I've been wanting to put together one of these for quite a while, just haven't gotten around to it. Reports on the battery life have been so good though that it's eventually going to bug me enough that I will. :)

Take a reading after an hour of vaping and see what it reads. Batteries are initially overcharged right out of the charger, but quickly drop down to the battery's rating. Example: 3.7v Li-ion's go from 4.2 to 3.7 in a matter of minutes

under load i'm only getting 4.5 volts

so i had to recalculate

it means only 8.8 watts at the atty, at 1.95 amps with Joye 510 2.3 ohm atty

it also means my perceived "sweet spot" is much lower than I had thought, so maybe i can graduate to a li-ion - something more comfortable and lighter to carry around

this is cheap but not ideal (heavy, ackward, ugly), tho a set of batteries lasts me 18-24 hours

that mini-copper looks really sweet after lugging this thing around for months, hahahaha

:p
