Yeah, well in most cases a 30w iron should work... his old soldering iron is obviously giving up the ghost and not performing like it should. He deserves a new one for going through all this! It will come with a new tip too! Add some flux and solder and you're good to go! Some are even adjustable.....

30w should get hot enough, 40w is my proffered but 30w is what my old iron was. Get a new tip or take it out and run it on a brush wheel, then tin it and wipe it clean.

If you have a multimeter check the connections ohm rating while connected and while the switch is on. Make sure there is no connection to ground on the control pin, if your not using it, I would just snip it as close to the base as possible.

I've been using the same 15w/30w iron for 15 years and it still performs like the day I bought it. Believe me, I used it often. As long as you clean and tin the tip regularly and occasionally file the tip clean. The only instance where it is underpowered (in my case) is when you need to solder the atty base to the end cap of a copper tube. So, I recently bought a Weller Dual-Wattage Gun 100w-140w. My first copper mod I used the RS propane iron with the torch tip for the atty/cap. The second one came out nicer with the gun.

Man! You guys.... you don't get it

he needs a new iron.....

Don't wreck it for the guy! Geesh.

The guy's wife posts "I'll get him a new iron" and you guys post "oh, NO. You just need a tip."..... Hope he doesn't find you.......

lol.

Like I said jj2... some are even adjustable. :)

EDIT after post 27: OK breaktru... that was mostly directed at our buddy rannox....lol. (jk rannox) Good point about tip maint. And I've trashed one overheating it for an atty shell connection before.

Your lucky you live on the other side of the country jj2. I would be coming over knocking on the door at 3 am asking if i could use the new iron if you were closer :). Naw i am kidding i would come over knocking at a respectable hour. I hope the new iron solves the problem. From what i can tell in the pics it looks dead on as far as being wired right.

Sorry to hear it is freezing there. I guess it would be rude to mention we had a high of 71 today and 66 right now. So i wont mention it :)

Very nice of you.:p

You got to remember who you are talking to---tools just aren't a big thing.
Of course they are for modding so in this circumstances they are a VERY big thing.

OK,, you came to your senses near the end there, I thought there for a min. I was in the wrong forum.
After all this is the modders forum. Tools ARE everything.

I'm one of those guys that will look at something that sells for $100.00 and think,,, Yea right, I could build that myself for $20 bucks. then I will go out and spend $300 buying the tools so I can build it for the 20 bucks. cool right?

Mini lathe he's got.
Dremel he's got.
Drill press he's got.
Mig welder he's got.
He loves tinkering it's just hard for him to do these days, and his 40 years (or so) soldering iron just wasn't working too well.
I make sure he never runs shy of batteries and connectors.:)
