So here's a question: I have a 5 week field study program approaching in a few months and need to figure out my vaping situation. I'm not wanting to bring a single analog. Luckily, the 1st week is in a research station with electricity and the next 4 are in the middle of nowhere but we have a solar power generator. We're expected to have a report done so people will be charging their laptops - so charging a battery shouldn't be a problem. The main thing I am worried about is lack of shade and high heat - temps up to 110 F. I figured I should have a back up battery or two. Won't be able to do normal maintenance on any product - I was thinking about just bring a whole bunch of blank cartos. Not sure how well hardware or liquid will keep in the heat.

Anyone have advice? What would you bring on 5 week trip to the middle of nowhere (no running water, but you have a reliable source of electricity)?

What PV/batt combo are you using? Could make a substantial difference in what ya need to take.

Since ya'll will only have a solar gen in da field, I'd be more worried about too much shade!!!

Currently I have an eGo-T with a smoktech U-DCT tank and kanger t3 (and blank cartos that I don't use) as well as an eRoll. Not till three months away, but figured future acquisitions could be geared towards my trip. I have a feeling I'll be upgrading within this time frame. Maybe a simple mechanical mod, or something more complex.

Suggestion: I second the burying suggestion. The temperature even a few inches below ground is significantly cooler.

That, and you can go "Yar! Time to go get me buried treasure!" for extra cool points.
I was thinking about getting a small lock box and burying them, but this just added so much more awesomeness - plus I'll be that guy in the field who vapes and thinks he's a pirate - wait, is there even a 'that guy' yet?.

Also the 12000 battery pack is a great idea. I don't know how willing they'll be for charging non-work related items, but I could also just charge the battery from my comp (I think it's around 6000 mAh) and just charge my laptop more (if I need to be discrete with my PV for some reason)

Ooh what are you studying out there? That's what I want to know.

I'm still a bit unsure about the first site form the course. It's basically 3 months of GIS work then using that data in the field to make maps. I know more about the course work that's done entirely in the field - near Bishop, CA. We'll be doing geologic mapping with topographic base maps, stratigraphy and structure analysis in the Poleta Fold Belt in Deep Springs Valley, CA. There's been a lot of faulting and folding in the region and we'll need to work backwards trying to establish the geologic history, and what it used to look like before it essentially got ****ed up.

They have bigger and much less expensive USB power banks on ebay than that amazon one. They usually say they have all types of protection so I wouldn't worry and they should hold up as good as name brand ones from Best Buy, but I'm no battery expert.

20,000 mah PSU for $6.78 including shipping and all types of adapters for phones, tablets, etc. You can plug your ego USB adapter and not need to buy a whole new PV with many spare batteries.

They have 30,000mah and 50,000mah maybe higher and you might get a good deal on a little solar panel/hat/backpack. They probably have something you crank by hand to generate electricity or maybe even something you attach to your legs and generator as you walk.

mah usb -car | eBay

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you only need the output to be .42 amps for it to charge an ego battery adapter, so anything over .42 amps will work fine and the protection just kicks in. I don't think I've seen any under .8amp output anyway.

I have a long thread about this usb power bank idea and about protection that noone answered, but I think it's 99% right anyway. I'm more than likely getting an SLB ego 1200mah VV Passthrough to use outlets and car chargers whenever possible and carrying one of the small 2600mah usb banks if ever needed with a retractable usb to mini usb cord in pocket.

long thread about this, but maybe someone will chime in.

Personally, I'd bring some cigarettes too if everything were to fail no matter what you chose. Sounds like a good time to be forced to not smoke or vape, but some of us need to chose that time ourselves.

Personally if I was in that situation I would take a battery pack, small solar cell, 24 or 36 mg juice and an iTaste MVP. Been thinking about getting one if those just for extended trips and the size and flexibility.

I think that would pack down better on a bike over the regular mods, chargers and stuff.

Unless you are currently vaping them, keep your tanks off the batteries and in a cooler spot (along with your bottles) when ever possible. The prolonged heat or direct sunlight can heat them up to were they will flood before you even vape them. Plain cartos won't be as bad, but I would still keep them off and as cool as possible when not in use.

Just from my experiences here leaving a couple PV's in the car for a couple hours during this so called winter near the Tex/Mex border.

Sounds like a dream job, a great chance to put your gear through its paces, and yeah, be the cool guy who vapes and thinks he's a pirate. Avast ye vaper!

I'm the pirate ;) I sail since I was a child, and once or twice a year make a long trip. Juices in a ziplock bag go into the the bilge, below the floors, where the cooler water keeps them relatively fresh. But energy is a problem, since batteries needed for the VHF and GPS. The pack solved the problem, getting my VVs enough juice for the round trip (2 weeks)

omg geology
Neat! Geology is cool stuff, though I'm more into the biology/zoology myself.

Presumably you'll be there with other science minded individuals, so they might not flip out too badly if you drop your juice in a baggie and tuck it in a cooler.

I'm not sure what to tell you in terms of devices. Plastic might melt, but i don't want you to burn yourself with a metal one..

Man I should really think this over, i might find myself in this situation myself one day.
