501 atty with eGo battery/usb passthrough moisture under the cone

I started with a Joye 510 platinum and purchased an eGo battery with passthrough cable (I HATED the battery life the 510 gave me). So now I am using the eGo battery and cone with the 510 atty/cartridge. Are the eGo cartridges the same? I saw a mod on here where you cut the material in the cart in half to provide more room for juice. It works well, and I get no leakage without my cone. As I vape at work with my passthrough cable hooked to my battery, I will drop three to four drops of liquid in my cart and continue to vape. I have noticed a sizable buildup of moisture between my cone and my atty, as well as on the draw through ports on my cart. The buildup on the end of the cart is enough to where I am pulling juice through the hole in the end of the cart as I vape. tastes good when vaped... not so much when you get the liquid in your mouth. Also, when using my cone the moisture buildup between the cone and atty makes for a hard draw. Am I doing something wrong?

This is typical for carts, no matter the mod to them. The moisture you are getting is juice, which is going into the air-vents on the sides of the cart. Juice is probably also going into the atty/batt connection, and if you remove the atty and look at the battery terminal, you will probably see a drop of juice there too. The air is coming into the atty by the tiny side holes just above the battery threads, and if any juice is getting into the connect area, this will also gurgle.

The only way to get around this that I know of is to use cartomizers (cartos) rather than attys and carts. it does happen with cartos too, but much less, and you get a lot more than 4 drops before needing to top off. I hate to recommend an entirely different scenario, but most vets do not use the orginal carts anymore. Tank carts do hold more, but its harder to top them off, and they are plagued with leaks or not wicking well, giving a burnt taste. I personally use cartos almost exclusively...I have lots of Joye attys that are just sitting unused now. I like Boge LR cartos or dual-coil cartos. I have found them to be cheaper, less maintenance, less leakage, and superior vaping.

The cone acts as a carburetor, that is, it reduces the external air coming in, making it a richer vape. Sometimes I use a cone, sometimes not. I like a more airy draw, but that's a personal thing. Some do not. Often, even with cartos, there will be a juice buildup on the sides of the carto under the cone.

Hope this helps!

The cone acts as a drip shield (leak collector) and that is probably its best function, if you are not one of those who likes a tight draw. People who prefer an airy, free draw (like me) hacksaw 3mm (1/8th) off the top of the cone.

To reduce the leaks from an atty/cart combo you need some sort of cart mod. Blue aquarium foam works well. If you don't have that, you can also use an RYO cigarette filter, for the small 510 carts. It works just fine if you prepare it correctly and if you are using fairly viscous (not thin and runny) liquid - there is a tute on this in cart mods, though it's best for VG users. The original fluval batting is about the worst cart filler to use.

Another route is to use a commercial drip shield such as the Avid Vaper one. This collects the excess liquid and re-uptakes it, just like the cone does.

Or another way is to use a mod with a bund - a drip container wall built in to the top of the mod, like on a Reo. (A bund is the flood container wall seen around a large commercial oil storage tank.) This is another way to re-up.

Average to heavy vapers tend to use cartos a lot now, instead of atties/carts. But the atty & cart system is still very good for light vapers, for those who swap about 3 or 4 flavors a day, for those who prefer dripping at some time of the day, for extended dripping with a bonut (SS donut) arrangement, and for certain types of mods like bottom-feeders. The atty is by no means dead, it's just not the #1 choice it was in the past.
