Dolphins shut down half of their brains when they sleep.

rather than sleeping the way we do, they spend 8 hours every day with half of their brains shut down. They just float around semi-consciously. So if you ever wanted to use a half-sleeping dolphin as a pillow, now you know what to do.

Dolphins are "conscious breathers". That is, they need to think about every time that they breathe. If they went fully into sleep like we do, they wouldn't be able to breathe, and they would die.

Lactose tolerance is a mutation. Lactose intolerance is the original form of the gene.

Scientists have looked into the human genome to find the precise genetic mutation that causes lactose tolerance. Lactose tolerance in humans always come from the same genetic mutation, regardless of whether they are of European, Asian, and African descent.

Most people in the world are lactose intolerant. People do not naturally have the ability to digest milk beyond infancy. The sugar, lactose, that is present in high levels in milk causes nausea and bloating in most adults. Europeans and Americans are much more likely to have the genetic mutation that allow them to digest lactose. Lactose intolerance is present in only 5% of Northern Europeans but nearly 100% of Southeast Asians.

Animals can rain from the sky

Amazing science fact: raining animals is a relatively common meteorological phenomenon, with occurrences reported from many countries throughout history. The animals most likely to drop from the sky in a rainfall are fish and frogs, with birds coming third. Sometimes the animals survive the fall, especially fish, suggesting a small time gap between the extraction and the actual drop. Several witnesses of raining frogs describe the animals as startled, though healthy, and exhibiting relatively normal behavior shortly after the event. In some incidents, however, the animals are frozen to death or even completely enclosed in blocks of ice.
