I can't compare the 510 to a 901 (Don't own one) personally but will give my thoughts.

The 510

The Positive:

  • Atomizers seem to be very solid if taken care of. I can't tell you when they die because I still am using one for almost 2 months. Janty picked a great name with "Dura"
  • Vapor production is great especially for such a small atty
  • Will suck a cart dry if used correctly and topped off
  • Doesn't leak much unless you really overfill it.
  • It's very small
  • When atomizer is faulty, will not cause a harsh burnt metal taste. From my experience these attys either work or they don't.
The Negative:

  • Battery life is very poor. You will need about 3-4 batteries for an 8 hour period (PCC and good USB Passthrough is highly recommended)
  • You must drip or top off very often if not using a cart mod. The cart is very small and doesn't hold very much liquid.
  • Blank carts are slightly more expensive if buying in bulk
  • Draw is slow and hard compared to 801 and drags take a bit longer to produce a ton of vapor (Small atty surface area)

That is all I could think of off the top of my head at the moment. Hope it helps!

Also:
The manual switch is highly recommended for this model. There seems to be so many issues with the auto from what I have read.

Note: I only have 2 801 models to compare the 510 to.

I started vaping with the 901. I recently started using the 510, I do have to admit I like the 510 better then the 901. as far as the batteries I have found IMO that the batteries last about the same amount of time. I do feel the the vapor and throat hit is better with a 510. The cartridge does hold more juice and last longer than the 901.:) I definitely love the manual batteries over the auto batteries.:D

Interesting what you are saying about the carts not holding much liquid!

I thought that was one of it's strengths?

The 510 auto battery produces excellent vapor with minimal drag by using pulsing your drag as opposed to a long steady drag.

Yes, that works - but it is not a pleasant way to vape in my opinion. I have both and I think that if you want a 510, get manual batteries - the auto batteries for the 510 are garbage (2 second cutoff on all that I tried). All those little puffs just burn juice and I feel like an old steam powered locomotive. I prefer a single 3-4 second draw myself.

... The passthrough still s*cks compared to my 901 and 401 PT's...Only in that it nose dives in production after a while..Where as the other two don't.....To be fair, my PT had a faulty battery, replaced it ..much better but still not as consistant as my 901-401..However, you can unplug the 510 PT and still vape off of it for a few hrs, which is cool....But, I'm not trying to be too judgemental yet ..Untill I try the second PT...
Did you try the second PT? I have two passthroughs for 510 from two different suppliers, but they both look identical. And both PTs are terrible. I actually find myself taking a primer puff just to see if the passthrough works. I hope puresmoker gets the new PT with 510 connectors soon!

I got my manual 510 and PCC today. I love it so far. I have used a penstyle and a 901. What I noticed right off the bat is how much different the juice tastes. My penstyle gives a powerful throat hit and I like that, but I didn't realize what people meant about the taste you lose with a penstyle until I got the 510. I didn't realize you could get a great throat hit AND flavor. I love the idea of having a portable power source. The only issue so far with the PCC is that my batteries are too short to activate the charger when I close the lid. I cut a piece of sticky foam insulation and stuck it to the inside of the lid. Someone posted that fix in a different thread. It works. I haven't noticed any burning taste from the cart. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I love this thing. Special thanks to Surf Monkey for the great review that helped me decide to get one. :hubba:

I've tried most of the ecig models and yes, the 510 is now my favorite. The only thing I don't like with it is the round cart. I tend to put the LED side in my mouth often.
I use the 901 carts on it and it works.
I'm getting 4 more manual batteries, 4 attys and a PCC.
I use a Mod at home and the 510 when I am out.
Next to the 510, I like the 901, and next to that, the 801.

I've just got my 510 manual kit from ruyandirect today, but both batteries only last about 20-30 minutes the most for heavy vape, I'd charged both for 8 hours before use, but my M401 battery only 200 mAh more then the 510, it can last me 3-3.5 hours of continuous vape, I mean CONTINUOUSLY, I'd vape randomly with Non-Nic and Nic though, beside the battery life, everything has work great on the 510, the taste of the liquid and the throat hit is wonderful, If I will choose again I will not buy the 510 anymore, 30 minutes of usage just ridiculous.

The only thing I don't like with it is the round cart.

This is not a plug, just letting you know because I don't dig the round carts either, but dietSMOKES has whistle tip carts for the 510. I use them exclusively now. They look cool on the device and I never try to suck the wrong end anymore. They're not soft like the 801/901 tips, but they're cool none the less. Highly recommended. I assume other suppliers will stock them soon too if you have a favorite you like to work with. If not, give Parked a shout and grab a few from diesSMOKES.

There's no doubt that the 510's battery is its one serious weakness. But once I got a PCC for it the problem went away. I just swap out for a fresh one each time the current one goes dead. Maybe three or four times a day, then charge the case itself over night. I wish the batteries were stronger in these, but the benefits of the 510 far outweigh the detriments, especially with the PCC at my side.

You can also use 901 carts (whistle tip), that is what I use. I had them laying around and heard they would work. The fit is snug the first time. I haven't even tried the round carts that came with it, I went right to using the 901 carts. They might be easier to find than 510 specific whistle tip carts.

Thats pretty close to my experience with the 510 although I get a little out of the 401 batteries (2.5-3 hrs) and a little more from the 510 (45 min- 1 hr) and I think the taste is alot better from the 401. As someone mentioned it does seem like some batteries get better after a few charges but I never get much more than an hour from the 510s. I did a puff count and I have never broken the 100 puffs (about 5 analogs) with the 510 while the 401 get from 190-250. I that is your style you probably shouldn't bother with the PCC. I have one and I lap it to the point that if I am out for any period of time it just becomes another thing to carry. Unfortunately for me the 510 is just attached to the PT now which is a bummer because I have gotten to like the manual in certain situation. The more I use these things the more I see a big battery mod in my future.

I can't believe you were getting even close to 100 puffs with the 510. If i take more than 10 drags, im melting the cart, melting the filler, and getting the worst plastic taste ever. Im going to retire my 510 as a dripper (and ive only had it 5 days)

Thats around 80 per battery charge. I am sure I topped off about 4 or 5 times in there. I have only had the melting problem when I tried to drip without any batting in the cart.
