I don't know if anyone has done this but I couldn't find it if they did. I think some people are confused in the way the cartridge functions, thinking that the vapor comes through the wick. I split one lengthwise and highlighted it to show the actual vapor path and reservoir. I hopes this helps.
I use the blue foam and it works great. I have also tried the brass screen that works also, but is more dependent on the viscosity/surface tension of the fluid and the mesh size. When filling the brass screen cartridge I find if you fill from one side and let the air escape on the other it work fine. Foam is so much easier though and for $8 you can make a gazillion of them so just chuck them if they get messed up.
