Just not sure why the original don't work and the spare does?

It depends, from your original post I'm assuming that the original was an automatic batt and the two manuals came later?

It could be a number of reasons: most batteries can only be recharged about 200-300 times (so once a day will get you 10 months of use, but with the little 510 batts you may recharge more often than than, I wouldn't be surprised if a 510 batt only lasted 4-5 months). Also, automatic batteries can fail if they get any e-liquid in them, and even using prefilled cartomizers it's always possible for a small amount of eliquid to build up over time.

Honestly, 9 months is a very long time for any e-cig kit... you should be glad that you have any original parts remaining. ALL e-cig parts expire, most within just months of purchase. The only way to avoid this is to get a nice MOD, but even then you'll be replacing atomizers and rechargeable batteries... only the body of the cig won't have to be replaced with a mod.

It's always good to have spare parts around, but for $30 you can get a whole new kit with longer lasting batteries too:
Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510

With the Riva510 lite bundle kit all your existing 510 parts will be interchangeable, so you won't have a drawer full of useable parts that are now valueless. The only exception is the charger: you must not charge your small 510 batteries on the Riva charger because the power is too strong and will kill the smaller batts.

Good luck!

also:

fwiw, I think your auto battery died because it was an auto (they just aren't as hardy) it may be gummed up and the switch that engages when you inhale may have stopped working. btw, how do you know it has a charge if you can't get it to work?

also fwiw, you can just keep buying spare parts for your 510 kit if you like, I just think the Riva presents a better value because you get two batts (each lasting about 8 hours between charges, which equates to a longer life because you charge less often) and two atomizers... you can get two spare 510 batts and two spare 510 atomizers for $30 afaik but you also get another charger and 5 empty carts, so the value is just plain better.

OK so what about Riva 510 vs. Joye EGO? How do they differ and which is recommended?

They are basically the same device but manufactured by different companies. Neither is better or worse.

Riva510: 750mah, rubber button w/blue light, gold band, 3.7v (I hear it's a true 3.7v)

eGo: 650mah, plastic button w/white light, silver band, 3.2v (I hear)

I have never tried the Riva personally, but I am hearing many people prefer them over the eGo (even though they are supposed to be the knock off copy) because of the comfort of the rubber button (less likely to stick) and they say it runs at slightly higher voltage -- plus I believe they come with lower resistance atomizers too.

I now own 3 Riva 510 lite kits from LF. I started with 1 which came with two attys and two batteries, 750 Mah vs ego at 650. After reading the possibilites of atty life and battery I started to order backup parts and decided it was about as cheap to just order another kit while they're still about $30. Also my wife has a Joye 510 because she wanted hers to look more like a cigarette. Within two weeks she had my other battery because it lasted all day. I ordered the third when my closing date on my cc rolled over because she totally took over my 2nd. Everything I bought for both of us in equipment juice, and accesories is still well under what either one of us would have spent on analogs for one month. We were both heavy smokers and I know what will happen if for some reason we can't vape. I'd be at the nearest convience store buying a pack. Even if I had spent more getting everything we need it would be worth it for health reasons alone.

ego batteries have a 6 month warranty at liberty flights. I believe it's a two month warranty on attys. 45 days on starter kits.

OK... so none of this applies to something 9 months old, right?

The fact of the matter is killing one 510 auto battery and one atty in 9 months is amazingly little loss for that amount of time.

Unless you posted that in response to my stating that the people I know are happy with a month and a half from an atty. In which case, I can only say the people I know who've gone through enough attys to care how long they last on average are dripping flavor snobs who generally kill them by cleaning. The only people I know who routinely burn them out to kill them are people vaping at HV. Like all warranties, I'd imagine Liberty Flights would not honor it for extreme wear and tear on the product (which a full cleaning every other day and HV vaping both place.)

Some say they are pretty much the same and I suspect that for the average vapor they are. However, the guys that get into the technical side of things (not me...yet) say that the Riva is better because it delivers a true 3.7 volts under load. The eGo is reputed to deliver 3.2 to 3.4.

I too started seriously with a 510. Broke one lost one and now loving the E go/ Riva model. I can use 510 carts, atty's, Cartomizers and now playing with the tank cart. Liberty Flights is a great site to buy these. You can buy a Riva battery for a couple of dollars more and use it with 510 hardware, though the charger takes a little more time to charge, not an issue though.
Liberty has great customer service and quick and cheap shipping rates. I actually get their stuff quicker from the west coast than others closer.

Just get smth with removable battery/batteries. eGo batteries is not a grate ones. They produce very little power, losing voltage very fast and do not last very long. My new ego fully charged 750mHa delivered only 3.2-3.49V and used one (about a month) only 2.4-2.6V (2.44v trough USB). And they are not under a load.
PS. Just tested about month old KR808D-1 manual battery (an every day heavy use) and it shows 4.29V !!!!!
No wonder I don't have the same problems like w/eGO.

As others have stated, you are VERY lucky that your 510 kit lasted as long as it did. I can't count how many batteries and atomizers I have replaced in a 9 month time frame.... The 510 kit works well when new, but the low mah (capacity) requires your to charge them so often. Batteries last only a certain number of cycles. I had a problem with poor performance with the standard 510 once used for a while. It was the dying batteries. They couldn't deliver the needed voltage to fire an atomizer properly and the atomizers would clog up making them hard to pull a drag. I almost gave up vaping altogether. I couldn't figure out why they worked so great when I first bought the kit, but could never get that performace back even with new atomizers.

It was the batteries! Get a higher cpacity battery like the eGo or Riva. They are tiny in comparison to some of the big battery mods out there. The eGo advertises 3.7 volts, but tests have shown it drops to 3.1-3.2 volts under load. You can not accurately test a battery's voltage without a load (no atomizer on it). If the Riva is truly a 3.7 volts under load, definitely get the Riva. I can not state whether this is true or not because I have not used the Riva. Either will be a great choice and should be a great upgrade for anyone that liked the standard 510.

Y'all make me happy that my first PV is the Riva 510 from LF. I was lucky to get the last Carto Delux pkg recently offered and I love it even tho I have nothing to compare it to yet. I'm afraid I haven't quite caught on to the atty and cart operation so the cartomizers were a good choice for me. LF ships super fast, another bonus!

With the 510 XL batteries, I can get pretty close to 4 hours of fairly constant vaping. I have also found that most times when I think a battery has died that I can play with the knob that makes contact with the atomizer is kind of pushed down a bit and that I can bring it back up with a paper clip. I was ready to toss a few batteries, but after a little work, I was able to bring them back to life. I think it happens when I screw them down too tightly in the charger, and it depresses that knob (annode?)
