I have a passthrough for my 510, it has a battery in the center of the wire, for what reason I dont know. It just limits the power and voltage.
I want it to run on 5 volts, which can be drawn off of the USB.

Has anyone cut the wires, and eliminated the battery portion, and then rewired. Does it work, and does it work good??

The battery is what makes it a pass through. without the battery it's a USB powered atty. Not sure if you would get 5v if you bypass the battery. Most USB powered e-cigs have electronics in the body that cuts the voltage (that's why the tiny switch doesn't just burn out). I have a couple of factory made USB powered e-cigs and have checked the voltage supplied to the atty... 4.1 to 4.2 volts, not 5 volts.

If you want to run 5 volts I think it would be better to build your own, you just need an adapter for the atty, a box, a switch, some wire, and the USB cable to make it.

we tested my 901 passthrough and it was at 4.9volts.
And its just a usb cord, with one single wire into the battery thats it.
No cutoff.
Thats why i was thinking I could just cut the extra battery part out, and just reattach the wires.
If you do I hope you have better luck then I did. Mine just overheated the switch and quit working. There is a PCB in the switch but I cannot say what it does, but it may not be able to handle the 5 volts.

These things do vary. My 901 PT runs at 4.12 volts measured at the atty connector and does have cut off as does my 801. My 501 is the only one I have with a battery and is my current daily vape, so I don't want to cut it up just yet...

Where is the 901 at 5v from? I'd like to get one of those.

Puresmoker makes them for 901's as well.

Open the battery holder case and solder a wire from the + side on the usb end to the + side on the other end of the circuit board(+ terminals are marked on the circuit board). Plug it in and you will be vaping 5v usb power. This completely bypasses the circuitry and sends power straight through to the atomizer. Do not put a battery in the battery holder after you do this mod. If you want to revert back just remove the wire you soldered.

I tried that but it seems t5o have bypassed the switch. Everytime you plug it in the battery is on

I heard someone on the forum, just cut the two wire ends, essentially removing the whole battery part, and rewired. They said it worked just fine, and Im sure it ran close to the 5 volts then.
Puresmoker does sell them.
I ordered, a 510 one, over 2 weeks ago, and it still hasnt shipped.
I get my other ones from my supplier, they are the one with the battery.
My 901s dont have the cutoff or the battery, and they seem to run really close to 5 volts, around 4.8 or 4.9.
They are definitely cheaper, thats why Im trying to see if I can rewire the 510 version.

I dont have a soldering kit,
so thats why I figured Id try just cutting the wires,
and reattaching, You think it will work.
I dont want to use the battery in the line, peroid.
It provides the same amount of power as the regular batteries, that come with them.
IF not less, I think.
I want the 5 volts.

Figured it out.
Just cut the battery portion out.
Then strip the wires,
Next burn the green and purple epoxy wire off with a lighter for about 5 seconds.
Then you will have copper wires showing.
Attach them sufficiently,
Tape em up,
and presto,
more power.
UGH, UGH, UGH.
Little tim the tool man reference there.
Sorry,
Anway its easy.

Actually I have been told that a USB port on a computer will not normally supply more than 1/2 an amp without the USB negotiating this with the computer!!
Apparently the passthrough cannot do this so you won't get more than 1/2 an amp which won't work the atty very well.
See
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/uk-e-smokers/36738-battery-usb-pass-through.html#post561658

Firstly : Your standard USB port ( more so on older PC's ) will only supply 500mA of power to a device before it needs to negotiate with the host and request a higher output. an ecig passthrough currently cannot interface with your PC to request that power increase.

Your standard ecig can draw up to 1500mA of power. This is why if you want to run a passthrough without a battery you will see most people use a mains powered USB hub which can deliver a higher ( 1500mA ) amperage without negotiation.

So I would be interested to see what results you guys get if you make the mod of taking out the battery bit!!
Hopefully not frying your computer

I have been trying to find out about the USB specification but with not much luck, nothing seems to mention the power aspect of it.

Actually I have found something about the USB
USB in a NutShell - Chapter 2 - Hardware

Also this (I have not read it all yet)
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/vaporstix/9461-regarding-usb-passthroughs.html

And this

"Fried my computer" 8-o

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/e-cig-technical-issues/9213-fried-my-work-computer.html

PErsonally I would not recommend anyone messin with thier passthough connected to their computer unless that are sure they know what they are
doing.
I don't really know much about it some people seem to know a hell of a lot more than me such as
e-cigarette-forum.com • The place for electronic cigarette reviews, news and chat - View Profile: ApOsTle51

And others in the threads.

Personally I have always though the USB passthough was a really weird and 'bad' idea, why on earh draw power from a computer communnications port?
The idea seems a little insane to me!!
Afterall if you are sitting by a computer you sure as hell are sitting by a power socket.
Aslo if for example I want to vape upstairs in my bedrooom, for example I
sure as hell don't want to be lugging my computer up there with me!!

Anyhow I think I will be turning some of my attention to simple mains power
adaptors such as.....something like this:-
AC/DC Multi-Voltage 5/4A Switched Mode Power Supply : Switched Mode Power Supplies : Maplin

l11bq.jpg

Ok it costs £20 but it rather portable,, I would just have to solder some wires from one of its connectors to the atty or whatever.
Plus it is useful to have anyway I would imagine for other applications.
Also no risk of frying my comp!!

Also I am pretty sure I have other old power supplers lying around from various devices which I might be able to cannibalize.
Trouble is I doubt any will be able to do more than 1/2 and amp and I think I need at least 1.5 amps.
