I have searched the past threads looking for info but have failed to find it, if it has been covered already could someone please send me in the right direction? thank you.

My new (just delivered this week from the Widow) 510 has fibers sticking up and all around the metal part of the atty, I am assuming these are what are burning and give a truly wretched poisonous taste? The kit came with two units and the other one had these same fibers but I managed to push them back in and all seems well. On the other one I cannot access it very well and would cut them off if I could or knew how, they will not go back down into or under the metal part (bridge looking thing) of the atty. I think the fibers must be some sort of insulation or something? What to do? thank you in advance.

I have re-charged, added juice, and tried a new cart, and tried blowing out as shown in the video by the hat guy (sorry I have not lurked long enough to learn all the names!)

Could be 1 of 2 things.

1) Either it is pieces of the polyfill in your cart sticking to the bridge and then going into the atomizer and burning or it is the wick that attaches to the bridge.

If it is the wick, and it is burning, IMHO you should stop smoking on that atty.

The way to avoid this is making SURE you have enough juice, and not "dry burning" your atomizer. The video from the guy with the hat is IMHO misleading because he advocates dry burning your atomizer. IF the wicks will burn, this will do it.

We don't *know* what the wicks are made out of (I think they are a fiberglass bundle personally), and they are, for me one of two very worrying things about vaping.

1) The wick material/chance of burning.

2) Chinese sourced juice.

I read up as much as I could about the wick burning thing 2 nights ago, and there is only so much info there. The end result seemed to be "don't dry burn.

Regardless, if it IS fiberglass, like I think it is, I was smoking plenty of it with my analogs, so this is still *probably* better.

If it is polyfill from the cart either try the teabag-mod, or be careful about picking off stray fibers when you top off.

In your bushes, watching you undress
The wicking from your cart stuck to the atty, this will happen.

The taste... did it just start, or was it there from the beginning? At first, they can taste bad because of the shipping primer.

Sounds like you are running your carts dry, and the atty is burning. This tends to happen on the 510 because it will produce vapor even when you're out of juice, it is a bit deceiving.

Thank you for the quick responses! I believe larcat is probably correct about the wick part. I had on my jewelers glasses and these fibers are definitely attached under the bridge thingy of the atty. I will try some dental tools to push them back down inside, if not I must have something that can get in there and cut them. I'll post back when I figure it out, thanks again.

I had that exact same thing on one of my attys. It's part of the wick - the underlying material, I don't know if it's fiberglass or what...

I didn't get really bad taste out of it - try making sure the wick never gets even close to dry. I figured, when I looked at mine, that if it's the core material of the wick, it gets hot anyway, so it can't be that bad...

I'm not sure, though, I've been thinking that mine doesn't quite taste "right" either. I was thinking of just dumping it.

Sorry, but I had to comment on this. Cigarettes never have and never will contain fiberglass. That was a myth, much like the whole fiberglass in Carmex. Cigarette filters did at one time, however, contain asbestos.

    Somewhere between here and there
I have had this happen before and I believe that it is from not enough liquid in the cart and sometimes I chain drag on my 510 which does not give the liquid in the cart enough time to wick on the atomizer. This definitely causes the filler to get too hot. I also always wash out a new atomizer before using it and clean it every few days after that. I think it keeps the liquid tasting better. You might want to try the tea bag filler method and see if that doesn't take care of your bad taste problem. You could also try taking off the cart and try dripping to see if the taste is better.

I finally fixed it, I had the luxury of excellent magnification beyond my jewelers glasses and was attempting to push the fibers back down after dropping a few drops on the atty hoping if the fiber was wet it would handle better. There was no way they were going anywhere and even with all sorts of small tools there was no way to cut the fibers shorter, finally they just pulled right out and it appears to work fine so far. They do look like some sort of fiberglass but they had a lot of liquid on them so I couldn't really say what the fiber was, just looks similar to fiberglass. Thanks for all the help.

As a last resort you can remove the fiberglass wick and still use the atty. I have an atty now that I removed the wick and it is about 2 months old and still works fine. There are two types of wick configurations I have seen. One Imo works better than the other one. Generic 510s have a long wick that spans the whole length of the coil. It curves under the metal bridge and runs the whole coil.

The other style is like the dura attys where the wick is alot shorter, so short infact you cant see the wick threads unless you look very close. This configuration the strands are alot shorter and are cut to fit where the ends just dangle on top of the coil. This imo is the best design and is what I try to purchase if I can. It seems in my experience that the style that runs the length of the coil and fans out around the edge have the burnt taste more often. The other dura short wick style have a better less burnt taste.

If you have a steady hand you can pull out the wick and cut it to barely dangle on the coil or remove it all together. You will see a slight performance loss if you remove the wick but it vapes good enough to get ur moneys worht out of it. I have had luck boiling them and it boils out the burnt taste a bit to make it tolerable. Use something like a all metal strainer to keep the attys off the bottom of the pot, if you let them touch the bottom of the pot it can melt the little wires and cause a short circuit. Hope you find a solution to your problem and hope this helps a bit.

one of my 510's had a burning taste. i pulled out the "fiberglass" stuff and it just looks like its made of polyester or something, fiberglass wont burn like this stuff does.

anyway - it was burnt, the edges were black. i removed it completely and washed out my atty. im letting it dry now for a day or so, i'll let you guys know how it works after.
