Is your PT regulated? If it isn't, how are you powering it?

If you are not using a 5 volt 2 amp wall wart to power it, then you probably aren't getting nearly as much power to the atomizer as you might think you are. So the regulated box mod would be providing more wattage to the atomizer than the PT.

Just guessing here, I'm sure someone much smarter than me will give you a better answer.

Could be the power source to the passthrough as Bluzeman suggested. A 3.0 ohm atomizer/cartomzier at 5.0 volts would draw 1.667 amps of current.

Another possibility is that the passthrough has a lower current rated switch or cheaper wiring that can't effectively deliver the power required by the circuit. I recall hooking up a 2.0 amp / 5.0V power source to one of those kiddie circuit board science kits and testing the voltage under load. I'm pretty sure it dropped to around 4.6V but I didn't bother to learn exactly why that is. Some cursory googling suggests that typical [unregulated] AC/DC transformers can drop in voltage under load.

I don't think it's regulated? It's powered through the wall. The wall wart says Input: AC100-250V 50/60Hz and Output: DC5.0V +/- 0.5V, DC2000mA +/- 5%. Soooo yeah. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only guy on this forum who didn't go to electrician school.

Get one of these . It's so easy to use... It will open your eyes to what happens with different power sources and different attys/cartos.

I built a little testing rig more like this a while back. The madvapes voltage indicator is much easier to use. Well worth the fifteen bucks. handy tool to have around for sure.
