5V Solid Wood Mod

I started this mod pretty much on a whim, with no real plan in place and using a 'scrap' piece of Mahogany. Much of what I ended up doing was to make things work.

The piece of wood I had was about 1.5 inches by .75 inches I cut off enough to hold two Trustfire 14500 batteries end to end - plus a bit more. I tried to keep everything so the grain would line up when I glued things back together.

Here's some shots of the parts.

To drill the holes I used a spade bit. To keep my fingers out of the way if something goes wrong, I used this to hold things in place.

To regulate voltage I used the TI PTR08100WVP that had been discussed in other posts. It doesn't make a lot of heat, and is high efficacy. Once I got everything put together and started using it, I realized the cut-off input voltage is 4.5V. batteries don't last as long as I would like - epically if they get cold. (which happens in Wisconsin this time of year!)
