I tried the machine screw, once. I have good luck using a large (approx. 2mm) needle. Some people use the smooth end of a small drill bit, and some just wrap it around the wick.
I have my own method using cotton cooking twine. I use the needle to wrap the coil. (5 wraps of 32g Kanthal gives me 2.0-2.2 ohms.) I then use a bead
threading needle (Hobby Lobby) to pull the cotton through. Install the coil in the base, more cotton twine on top for the flavor wicks, replace the tube, cut the excess twine, test on the Vamo and then do another.
It's really something that you have to experiment with no matter what material you use. It took me several rebuilds to get just the right amount of cotton for the coil wick and the flavor wicks. Using the twine I've found that more is better. Less, and it would gurgle.
I'm sure that there are other threads here that go into more detail using silica. Try using the search function. If that doesn't work, scroll back through the threads to find one that mentions coil rebuilding in the title.
Good luck and happy
vaping.
