7 Stores and 2-1/2 Hours Later: No PG or VG - just a pharmacist leading me to a laxative

I know it sounds funny, but that's exactly what happened.

After almost three weeks of vaping and ordering almost everyday online, moving from pre-filled cartomizers to buying e-juice, I was determined I HAD to cut the costs and cut the high nicotine juice I have lest I go broke on PVs.

My first "real" e-cigarette starter kit had come in the mail the day before :toast: (before then, I'd started vaping Premium e-cigarettes I bought at a local tobacco store), and even buying my own juice and reusing cartomizers was getting expensive. Now that my new ePower by SmokTech had come  I was vaping up a storm :vapor::vapor: and wanted to preserve my liquids. [BTW, I'd purchased it from Brent of Hoosier E-Cigarette Supply ---- I highly recommend him, great customer service and prices].

When I decide it's time to do something, I'm determined to do it right then and there. So yesterday, I went out in my town to buy some Propylene Gycol and Vegetable Glycerin.

First, I tried my grocery store in the baking section - hoping to find VG ----- NOPE. I asked the pharmacist in the store if she carried PG, but she said no to that also.

Next, I went to my usual CVS. My usual CVS is rather small and they had nothing there.

I'd read at least one post here where someone mentioned buying PG at CVS, so I drove across town to our other CVS, newer and bigger. Talked to the pharmacist there...........no PG or VG, but he suggested I go to a specific hardware store in town since they carried so much baking and canning stuff....I never told anyone why I was looking for these unusual items, so I chuckled at the thought that he thought I'd wanted it for canning or gourmet baking from scratch! Trust me - those things are not high on my list of things I do (in fact, I never do either!).

Since that hardware store was way across town, I decided to try a few more places before I went back that way.

Another (smaller, but more eclectic) grocery store that I thought might at least have VG in it's baking supplies....................NOPE.

A GNC health food store was next to the grocery, so I thought I'd give them a try. When I asked the woman working there, she got a rather strange look on her face as if I were requesting ...... or crack!

Next, I stopped at a new, rather large Rite Aid pharmacy, and went straight to the pharmacist again.
This time, he told me he was sure they didn't carry VG but that they did carry PG in the form of Miralax.......a laxative. He walked me over, reviewed the label and told me it was 100% PG.

I wasn't in the market for a laxative and it was a good thing I looked at the label because it was PEG, not PG. So glad I didn't buy that and spend half the night ..........well, you know where!!!

Last shot was the hardware store, but like the sign said ---- it was a hardware store and they carried tons of the "hardware" for canning and baking, but no PG or VG.

By that time it was pouring rain and rush hour and since we don't have Walmart, Target or Michael's (other stores I've read here carry them) in my town, I didn't want to get on the freeways to go to the towns that have these stores.

So, home I came - empty handed.:(

BUT AT LEAST I WASN'T "SMOKING" a laxative all night!:vapor::vapor::vapor: Scary that the pharmacist got those chemicals mixed up - but at least he isn't the guy who fills my prescriptions!

It's a new day, so I'm off to Walmart and Michael's and God only knows where else. If anyone has any suggestions of where to go, please let me know.

Thanks!

jjrose is right. Tractor Supply store often have PG USP, though I just buy mine when I get flavorings from online DIY places.

VG is sold as "Glycerin USP Skin Protectant", clear 6 ounce bottles, bandaid area of pharmacies. Ingredients should only have one item, glycerin USP 99.5% (or higher), may say "anhydrous" after the %; no other ingredients should be listed -- the stuff is thick, clear. I normally buy from Rite Aid, $5 for a bottle, though have also bought from Walmart.

Just a thought and I'm not sure if you've done this, but the one thing that I would suggest when asking for either product to be sure to use the full product name, ie. 'propylene-glycol' and 'vegetable glycerine'...if anyone looks at you funny and you don't want to explain ecigs, just tell them that you're making home-crafted soaps.

Craft and baking supply stores supply VG that is not Humco as well. Its around $1.99 for 4 oz. AND if you get it at the baking supply store, check out the "butter flavor" next to it. PG! in 4 oz for $1.99 Problem with that is you must find a flavor that mixes with butter. I use maple and such.

Maybe if you list your city you will find someone here who know where to look? I found someone 3 miles from me, and I live in far suburbs...

Butter flavor, generic, is something to please be careful about. Diacetyl is the classic butter flavor component, recommended not to vape it though fine for eating. The other buttery/custardy chemicals that are still at least somewhat questionable are Acetoin and Acetyl Propionyl. It's a topic that's been beaten to death on ECF.

Try DIY. Cuts costs. Has the proper stuff. No fragrances, or whatever.

FGS.... I think I spend about $50.00 per month (or less) on e-juice. I understand that sometimes people have "emergency" needs. But get the right stuff.

DIY e-liquid

I think I pay $4.50 for 8 oz and it lasts 2 or more months (for PG... longer for VG). You can try Dilution Base Liquid - One Stop DIY Shop Store

I'm probably going to get flamed to heck for this....

People keep quoting tractor supply stores and wally world Humco stuff... hey... If you really need to save that 50 cents or 1.00 difference go ahead. lol. Like I said.. I understand emergency need/ran out kind of thing. I also understand being broke. But WTF people... get good quality stuff that people check out for vaping. Remember that 99.5 % pure is still .5 % unknown. Seriously, $4.50 for 8 oz PG or VG isn't going to break the bank..... and it's sourced for vaping, without unknown manufacturing changes that could be nasty. You have to order nic-juice anyway, you're already paying shipping for that. Order some PG/VG too. I've had bad experiences with crummy VG from a vaping vendor even. So quality counts.

For example this:
I'm in Michigan and the pharmacist at the local Rite Aid offered to order it for me, in the next day. The CVS also offered to order it, so I used them. CVS has vg on their web site, $4.99 for 120ml of Humco, the USP product I use. Had it in by 1pm the next day!

Makes no sense to me. 120 ml is 4 oz. at $4.99????? Maybe Humco is the greatest stuff since sliced vaping.... IDK. But $4.50 for 8 oz is a better price and comes from a vendor that I trust that specializes in vaping. There are many others too.

Just the usual 2 cents.

You might want to try asking for VG as Vegetable Glycerin. You want 100% and it can be found in the First Aid section (at least at our Walmart). It is used as a skin moisturizer in addition to a baking ingredient. You may have better luck getting PG at a Pharmacy that mixes their own suspensions. Otherwise you may have to request that they order it for you. Make sure to ask for it by the full name and not the PG abbreviation so there is no confusion over what you want. Good Luck.
