Sometime... well most of the time... I am totally stupid about this stuff. Can someone please tell me why a company makes something like this and puts a price tag on it like that when they know full well that china is going to be the first of very few that will buy it to clone. It seems to me that if they put a price of $30 or even $40 on it to start with that many would opt for the original instead and they would make more money that way...
As a mechanical designer, I can actually provide a relatively good answer to this.
When a device like that is made here in America, or any other country that has control over copyrights and patents, the cost of engineering, prototyping, testing, and machining controls the price. Companies in China reverse engineer the product and produce it with crazy cheap labor, inferior materials, and less care in manufacturing.
I'm a hypocrite for saying it because I buy and use the Chinese products, but the fact that they flat out steal the design is highly immoral, and would be illegal anywhere else. Clones are almost never as good as originals in terms of quality and materials. Sometime the functionality can be just as good, and in some cases better, but usually the longevity and durability is inferior.
So that was the long answer. The short answer is that the original designer/manufacturer could never afford to sell the products for anywhere close to what China can sell a knockoff for. It's really sad, especially since I cannot afford to pay the price the legitimate one costs. It's also one of the main reasons manufacturing in this country has declined so much.
