Years ago when we were caravanning, a young couple with a very old car and caravan, two young children and a cat and a dog came onto the pitch next to us. Their spare kit was tied to their roof rack with string, the wife strung a length of string from one end of the van to the other and pegged out her washing, while the husband fastened a long length of string to the dog’s collar and then to the hitch before moving on to mark out a safe play area for the kids with canes and string.

We got chatting to them and found we really liked them a lot - they didn’t have a lot of money or things so they improvised...and you know what? They were some of the happiest folk we ever met, for they actually all liked eachother, were obviously all fond of eachother and were content with their lot.

We always thought of them affectionately as “The String Driven Folk” and they popped into my mind recently. How so, and what’s that got to do with vaping you might ask?

Well, a recent thread on here, talking about Vivi Nova tanks, got me remembering that the first tank that worked for me at all was the one that came on the e-pipe my daughter gave me last year and it was a Vivi Nova.. Then I knew practically nothing about vaping and hadn’t seen the well known ECF member’s signature about learning to get the best out of the kit you have before dashing out and buying more “better” and more “advanced” gear.

I wrote that tank off in 4 -5 weeks, because in part I did not know that (1) you had to change coils, (2) I did not know that you actually could get replacement coils and (3) I did not know that it being a plastic tank certain juices would attack it and, as I found, ruin its threading. I also did not know that there were wee tricks to get the best out of it such as getting your vaping style right i.e taking longer slower draws, making sure that the wick was always properly soaked by turning the thing upside down before drawing on it with power, taking a couple of unpowered draws before firing it up again to ensure that the wick was saturated and never ever vaping on it until it was completely empty. I didn’t even clean the darn thing - because I didn't know you had to.

All of that said, for the weeks I had it, and sadly misused it, it kept me craving free and off of smoking - so much so that when it fell apart on me in Spain instead of going out and buying tobacco in the village, which would have been “the easy option,” I jumped on the next bus to Fuengirola and found a vape shop - who sold me a Nautilus Mini and of course the rest is history…

Reading the Vivi Nova thread on here gave me the notion to revisit this tank. It being “old hat” ( and OMG how things have changed since only 2013!) I found a kit containing a Vivi plus a couple of spare heads in a 2013 gift box brand new for £3.00 online.

It arrived the next day, I primed it, filled it, took a drag...and found myself mentally back to last October thinking - “Hey this is actually good - I could really take to this!” I’ve been vaping on it for a couple of days now and really enjoying it - this simple “string driven” thing offers great flavour and a grand vape if you employ the “tricks.”

Again being simple and “string driven” it must be about the easiest thing to recoil and rewick in the vaping world.

I’m enjoying it...but that said I couldn’t go back to one permanently simply because it’s being phased out and the plastic tank is its weak spot and I know at some stage the threads will wear out no matter how careful I am. Again though, last night I found a UK seller who still had the replacement metal tank bodies for under a pound a throw, so I have ordered two.

Sorry to have rambled on...but a big thanks to the OP who raised the discussion on Vivi Novas for I have really enjoyed the trip back to Vaping’s Past, to all those who have contributed to my fund of knowledge through their great posts and to the Vision Vivi itself for showing me that I really really could come off of smoking!

Happy vaping all!
