A Family Affair

Hi friends,

My Pops quit smoking nearly 9 years ago, but has always loved hijacking my and my sister's e-cigs when we visit. Some of our fondest memories involve vaping our faces off while playing games, walking the dogs, hiking, etc etc. I know there's trepidation out there about "nonsmokers" vaping, but he did used to smoke 2 packs a day for 35 years. The oral fixation is still definitely there.

He recently bought his own setup -- an eGo style and he makes his own no-nic juice. But he's been listening to me rave about this forum and has started watching RipTrippers and is now interested in breaking into RDAs.

My question for all of you lovelies is this -- what's the best midrange priced starter RDA setup (tank, atty, battery, drip tip, coil-building necessities) he should look at? I'm still studying OHM laws for dummies and can't be much help to him, and all the info out there is so broad ranged and scattered. I've been raving about the Nautilus but understand its coils are not meant to rebuild and present advanced challenges. Any opinions from the fold?

Go!

Well if he's that new to vaping, my first response would be to have him go with an MVP2 and a mini Nautilus tank. But if he wants to go the rebuildable route...

The first beginner's kit my local vape shop put together for me included a Trident RDA which I'm told is one of the easiest RDA's to build (my first build didn't go so well, but that was a 'me' thing) and a K100 telescopic mech mod with a battery charger (which has been replaced) and an 18650 battery. The Trident comes with a drip tip so he wouldn't have to buy one. I'm sure your local vape shop can put something together for him, though it might not be the least expensive route.

As far as tanks go, I believe the Kayfun or the Lemo are the easiest to build, both of which also come with drip tips which are interchangeable. He'll need an ohms meter, something to cut wire (nail clippers will work), 28ga Kanthal, a 5/64 drill bit, minit screwdriver set, tweezers, some organic cotton or other wick material, etc.

I would imagine if he smoked for 35 years and quit for 9 years, he's probably in his mid-50's. I just made my first coil recently and I'm over 50 with the eyesight that goes along with it. If he has trouble seeing close-up, I would suggest a jewelers visor, magnifying lamp or a really *really* good pair of readers because the coils and decks are *very* small to work with. The platform you build the Kayfun on is much smaller than the size of a dime.

Anyway, there are tons of people on this forum *way*more experienced at this than I am at rebuilding since I just started last week. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come by to help... I'm replying to bump the post. Good luck! :)

+1 on the MVP v2.

It's a regulated devise (all the safety features AND you can use rebuildables on it). Your Dad would not be able to sub-ohm on it but he could build as low as 1.0ohm. I use my Kayfun on it (a rebuildable tank) and build it between 1.2 - 1.8. This would safely introduce him into the world of rebuildables.

1. Huge (2600 mah) battery
2. Variable Voltage - Voltage can be adjusted from 3.3 ~ 5.0 in 0.1 volt increments
3. Variable Wattage - Wattage can be adjusted from 6.0 ~ 11.0 in 0.5 watt increments
4. Ohms Meter - Reads the resistance of your atomizer
5. Ability to vape while charging
6. $40 shipped at many online stores

Very solid, good advice. I'd take it. :)

Coil Toy - Online calculator for e-cigarette resistance coil building

A lot of the coil building info here is confusing to a beginner, but there are helpful links like the engine above which can help...I use MVPs at home, so I don't sub-ohm like a lot of folks here do when they post their builds, but if you put your ohm target and wire size into this engine, it will tell you what to build. The MVP also has an ohm meter type option to check your atty build...and you can charge your phone from it! Coils are fine fussy type work, like fly tying or jewelry making, but worth the satisfaction in the end, and cheaper in the long run...
