Hey Don and Crew -

I don't hunt although love the steak, dig the elk, value the venison and crave moose burgers.

I do, however, fish.

This is a sturgeon just over four feet in length, hooked in six feet of water on the lower Columbia River. When hooked in shallow water, they go in just one direction - straight up. And these dinosaurs are delectable hot from the grill.

Wishing all of you on the east coast the best as Irene visits.

that sounds like a biggggggg fish:blink::blink:

That would be a BTF ... Big, Tasty Fish. Said to be unchanged for a eons, these cartilaginous critters (like sharks; skeletons made of cartilage rather than bone), have flesh the texture of halibut or tuna but very moist when cooked properly. Smoky from the barbecue, kissed with a little lemon, it's my personal favorite of all the fishes.

Yeah, four feet is a decent sturgeon although I've taken them to 55-inches. They strenuously object to being hooked which is most of the fun.

@ejoker - Those would be referred to as 'oversize' fish. Not legal to keep in Oregon or Washington State but there are folks who like to wrestle with 'em. They pull hard, huh?

yup, all but one was catch/release. but i don't think the one we kept became food. and yes, they are a tremendous fight. i couldn't believe when the bugger swam up current.

mmm now I want smoked Sturgeon.

<insert Homer Simpson donut drool sound effect here> Smoked sturgeon simply rocks. Matter o' fact, with a variety of fish available here including Chinook, coho (silver) salmon and even albacore, fresh-caught sturgeon is my favorite for the table (although fresh tuna is a darned close second).
