And I am saying that as an ICU RN, that at 180/120 you would be in my unit on a drip until we could get it under control. This is why I told you urgent care or ER, and not to wait for your doctor. I am not talking out my back end, I do it for a living. It should have been brought down much faster than 2 days. High blood pressure is known as the silent killer, because it does its work and you feel nothing. You are playing russian roulette. Have you seen a cardiologist? Or are you seeing a regular doctor?
All blood pressure meds can "dump" you, meaning cause low pressure. But 180/120 is considered a crises, an emergency, and needs to be monitored until we can get it under control. First we would treat the hypertensive crisis, then we would titrate you to find out what would work for you on an outpatient basis. Waiting for some drug to work over a week is not considered good practice. Did your doctor tell you the risks of essential hypertension, put you on a diet (sodium restriction at the very least) and tell you the risks of hypertension?
I only tell you this because I really think you are being mis-treated by your doctor. I would hate something bad to happen to you while all the while you thought it was "ok". It is NOT okay. I have a hard time understanding your thinking that 140/100 is acceptable, and that waiting another week for it to drop would be a good course of action. Your heart is working under tremendous pressure (pun intended) while your vessels are also. The ramifications of letting this continue can be death when a vessel can't take it anymore. Which is pretty damn serious. You need to see a cardiologist who can treat this now, not next week after the damage is done.
