Greetings,
Me and a friend had an idea for an e liquid app that I was wanting to run it by you guys - as to not copycat/waste time?

We were thinking of is your standard e-liquid calculator, but with a twist. We want to make a feature dedicated just for finding recipes you could make from all these flavors you have.

For example:
User has these flavors: Cherry - tobacco - Vanilla - Cinnamon. The user inputs their desired mix. Going off the flavors they choose, a list of community built recipes would appear.

Results:
Bob's fire tobacco (4 star)
Jane's Cherry Tobacco etc.etc. (1 star)

Free to upload recipes, browse recipes, and use the calculator. But a one time payment of about $2 for flavor search function. We will have to host a website for this first. Hopefully we can partner up with someone down the road and make it completely free to use.

Would anyone pay for a feature like this?

Thank you guys for the advice and input!

It is a great idea as an app. Daath has it here: e-Liquid Calculator :: Flavor list

Thank you Rocket! I figured someone out there had to have applied the flavor search idea by now. ^_^' I was not aware of that flavor list. Although that is practically the same thing I'm thinking of, but in web form. They're missing a lot of recipes and I think that is a void in the ever popular flavor search market we could fill. :D We're really not trying to clone anyone's hard work or business. So, I think I still have a bit more research to do.

And thank you guys for the positive feedback as well!

Are you thinking flavor/recipe search engine type thing?

Either way, it would make a great app.

I like the idea. I'll help where I can.

You will need software development skills, a web name, and web server space.

The first one is the biggie. Not necessarily in out of pocket dollars, but time and talent. (Software programs are never really finished.)

The web name is available via many places for $10 - $20.

The server space is one area I can help. I maintain hosting for several web sites I built and have plenty of spare space. I will donate the server space for a year to get this endeavor off the ground.

This is a free (limited) offer. Mods, I'm not attempting to sell anybody anything.

Either way, it would make a great app.

Currently, the premise is that recipe data will be pulled from from the user made database. Then if the flavor combination isn't found, we'll use Google's scraping APIs' to help find a recipe.

However, I'm going to try my best to never have that happen. I want to make the app free for all the people on ECF who are active in the DIY section. I think traffic is the only way to get good, reliable, and new, recipes. I want those new Mother Milk clone's etc.

One idea I'm thinking of experimenting with is social networking. Instead of the traditional methods of commenting/rating, I want to scrape through Twitter for hashtags. I think people would be more willing to leave feedback or interact that way.

Thanks rowdy! I appreciate the offer, but at the moment, I think we have everything covered. I'm a computer science major and my friend is a pretty decent web developer. Initially, we won't be concerned with a website unless traffic can sustain it.

When we get the base app in place, we will need alpha testers if that is something you would be interested in doing. There are a lot of Android devices out there.

Social networking is key, but don't forget us non-social networking folks. My personal experience on the diy sub-forum is that the majority are 40 plus. Granted, just by looking at recent threads, this is changing quickly. I just helped a recent hs grad. Lol. I'm sure there are many hip boomers here, and maybe I'm the only 30 something without twitter and the like, but just make sure there are other ways to comment/rate/etc.

Personally, the best advice I've received is from the old farts (please take no offense old farts). What about creating a separate thread asking people what social media outlets they use and what they'd personally want from a recipe database? Because I use grams, there are only two or so programs that offer it, and as an iPhone/Mac user, I can't even use the beloved e-juice me up.

Haha just realized I'm getting off topic. Maybe I should create my own. Jk

would this app only work on android formats and or Mac's? and maybe a calculator that will work via mac os?

Android platforms first. Then Windows and Linux (& website), then IOS. That is the order I'm most comfortable with programming wise. But if the app fails on Android, it'll stop there.

I've never attempted to make an IOS app, but it's basically C++ from what I hear. However, I'm not too keen on the idea of dealing with Apple. I'll have to look into it more.
