My great grandparents had a 1/2 acre garden!! They grew everything....lettuce, cabbage, tomato's, potato's, onion, carrots, radishes, green beans, crowder peas, bell peppers, okra, banana peppers, jalapenos, cucumbers, cantelope, watermelons..... When we went to visit in the summer we were put to work....LOL I remember spending days there while they canned everything. They even had apple, pear and peach trees on another 1/2 acre.

and greens...collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, spinach.

Basically if it didn't kill ya my folks grew it, canned it, froze it, pickled it. We was poor country folk. (j/k) But we never went hungry. LOL. I don't remember my Mom buying much canned or frozen veggies at the store.

Those were the best meals...LARGE country cookin' spreads (and the whole fam damily coming over to eat Sunday afternoon dinner, Aunts Uncles cousins their cousins...lol). YUMMMM! OK, I gotta stop...making myself miss my Mom and Grandma's cooking.

I can't believe I left out the turnips.....hmmmm.....probably because I don't like them

The only thing my grandparents had to buy was the meat and some pasta. Every thing else was home grown. I miss my Grandma's fried chicken!!! Nothing different than the way I would fix it now but when I was a kid that was the best chicken I ever ate!!

I miss the big family get togethers we had when I was little....lots of great food !

I miss that too! My family is all spread out now :(

oh my mom's fried chicken! I think we still have the electric fry pan she used...yum. On special occasions she'd make her version of chicken n dumplings. I remember rosemary in it..and my mom's an ol' country girl so that was very kind of unusual but delicious.
My family has dwindled down soo small. :( My mom's the youngest of 3, Dad was one of 2, I'm an only and my dd is an only. I hope she meets a man with a BIG family one day. :)

Last night I had salmon patties and macaroni and cheese, served with Coca-Cola and garnished with ketchup. Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream for dessert. I managed to go my entire disgusting-food-binge-cheat-day without eating a single vegetable. I love Saturdays.

I love salmon patties and I love to make potato cakes with it. I know so bad!

Tonight I was good and had a salad and grilled chicken to make up for pigging out yesterday and this morning!

Fudgey.......very same with my grandparents. I picked an awful lot of beans! My favorite thing was the grapevines. I'm surprised I never got sick on grapes, I ate so many.

Tonight was leftover pizza and the rest of the marinated beets in another salad.

Lots and lots and lots of beans.....LOL And then you had to shell them!

When I was a newly wed (1st time) I went to my In Laws in Virginia for a visit. They had me out in their veggie garden working in no time. (acres and acres!) I ate everthing raw out the garden which my MIL thought was weird..lol I saw the beets..as I love them I thought I could eat them like radishes...nope! I almost broke a tooth! They were great cooked and pickled though.

when I was a kid our neighbors had a farm...we would just grab some radishes, carrots, turnips, tomatoes, out of the ground or off the vines...and eat them...ah, the memories...:)...I have loved raw veggies all my life.Right out of the ground is the best...lol
