I have been a dual user most of the time I have been vaping, only quitting analogs for a couple of weeks at a time. But when I realize the ridiculous amounts of money I shell out on cigarettes, I am pretty serious about quitting this time, and I thought of a method that I hope will work: Every time I am seriously considering buying a pack of cigarettes, I put $6 (cost of my cigarettes) towards an octopus fund. I'll gradually buy the supplies for the tank as I save. Because having a pet octopus doesn't give you cancer.

As soon as you get the octopus they will publish a study stating that octopi do in fact cause cancer...

I do love this idea though, great stuff! I would do similar (but to save for a genetically engineered Persian Cat + Siberian Tiger hybrid --->To get a long haired small tiger), but sadly I spend all my 'cigarette money' on vape related items :/

Lol, mini long-haired tigers! Whee! An octopus isn't that expensive, the creature itself is around $50 and the setup would be around $100. And I don't spend much on vaping, I save a lot of money doing it, and I think gradually buying supplies for a new aquarium instead of cigarettes would be a good motivator. I am a pretty experienced aquarium hobbyist and currently have a seahorse tank and a freshwater tank, but I have always wanted an octopus ever since I used to work with them as a teenager.

I hope you have a very solid tank to put that in!

The Octopus is an escape artist, worse than an Eel crawling and pushing through every tiny cavity it can find to crawl out. Pay attention to the species as well, certain "pretty" Octopus can end you life! A Blue-ringed octopus (Blue-ringed octopus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) is probably the most gorgeous thing you'll ever lay eyes on. It can also kill serveral humans with a tiny bit of it's venom and there is NO known antidote to date! Don't take anyone's advice about no 100 dollar setup, you'll regret it with a flood in your house or worse depending on what you get. Do your research! Also they only live about a year or two (natural lifespan), here's some info: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2003/7/inverts

Just curious, why an Octopus?

Ah ok, I've been keeping a 175g coral reef for almost 20 years, 18 and a half year old tank (and still hasn't crashed) kinda proud of that. :)

I've had anything from Clownfish to Freckled Hawkfish in there, need to update my lights though still doing the T5s. Octopus are fun, I thought about getting a Predator tank but I have no room for it at the moment.

I miss my 75 gallon reef tank. Took too much to takr care of after having three kids.

Also had a 29 gallon anemone tank with two clowns. Had a 400 watt metal halide over it lol. The anemone got huge. The light displaced about a gallon of water a day lol.

I was using Halides up to about 6 years ago, the power bills finally got me to switch to T5s. I did see a small slow down in growth, but at least the power switches wouldn't trip in the summer when we turned up the AC man can those things suck up all your juice in a hurry! lol

Here is a few shots of the tank today:

And a few macro shots of some of the coral:

I've been keeping aquariums 10 years now, had a 65 gallon reef for a while. I had power compacts over it. Right now I just have a seahorse setup and a freshwater tank, getting the itch for a new tank.

And Spencer, I had a really cool carpet python. Sweetest, most docile snake ever. Also on my bucket list to get another one.

I feel I am missing out after hearing all this aqua love.

Seahorses are pretty amazing, I wouldn't mind sharing my lounge with them (that is if I couldn't get any Weedy or Leafy Sea Dragons).

Octopi scare me too much to want to keep (too intelligent). Plus they remind me too much of squid, which is probably the most evil sea dwelling creature (Giant/Colossal in particular).

For those who don't know, octupi are extremely intelligent and require enrichment. You can put their food into a glass jar so they have to figure out how to unscrew it to get it out. They can also learn vicariously so if you show them how to do something, they will copy how you did it should they not figure it out themselves.

Naw, man, jellyfish is what real ballers keep. Put a bunch of translucent glass pillars everywhere with a buncha jellyfish in 'em, people know you straight up got cash.

In all seriousness, I never understood dual use. I mean, most people hate how much they pay for real cigarettes, and vaping is literally a majorly cheap alternative. But dual use? You're not saving any money at all -- in fact, you're DOUBLING the amount of money you spend.

Yes. I hear Octopus are good eatin' and healthy for you.

Mean... but funny.

I have a 55 gal freshwater tank that I love. I have always wanted to try my hand at salt but dang, keeping a freshwater clean and healthy (6 years running with total stability) is hard enough.

My tank:

Sorry I don't have a good camera that catches the motion without blurring.
