The odd thing Thrasher is that I wasn't even pressing the fire button... I was simply holding the mod and screwing the atty on when it just blew up.

im guessing you inserted your battery into the tube and screwed up the switch first before putting on the atty? if you did thats the wrong way to do it. You probably screwed the 510 post on the atty down hard enough to push the battery down making it compress the spring on the switch permanently auto-firing it.

This is honestly one aspect of vaping I see that needs regulation, which is scary, because its regulation and you also cant trust everyone out there to go about and educate themselves on this type of stuff since vaping is getting huge. Regulation or no regulation in this aspect, both are scary, dont want government regulations but also don't want more and more people blowing stuff up.

Honestly, there is no way to regulate this given vapers are buying mech mods from vendors all over the world. FastTech is a good example.

Let me try to explain how to use a hybrid top/connector safely.

Your atty has a 510 pin that screws into a threaded "tunnel". When using this type of mod, the "tunnel" cannot touch the positive end of the battery, or this will happen. So the 510 pin must stick out of the tunnel far enough, and be stable enough to stay sticking out.

Clearos don't work. The 510 pin can get pushed up too far by the battery. The eXpromizer will not work because its 510 pin is spring loaded and would get pushed up.

Attys that have a recessed pin like the original Lemo won't work. The Lemo pin is supposed to be adjustable, but it often moves around if you back it out.

The Kayfun 4 or Rose v2 would be ok because you can unscrew the 510 and it stays there when you do.

I personally don't use this type of mod myself since it won't work safely with many of my attys, and I just don't want to take my chances. Be careful, folks.

I've always been amazed that mods with hybrid top caps ever made it into the mainstream vaping marketplace. Kinda like if Ford decided to sell street legal top fuel dragsters on their lots.

OR ... don't use a Ford pickup carburetor on one of these.

I thought hybrid mods come with their own tank/atty as a pair, so that there aren't issues like this...
This was not a hybrid in the true sense of the word. I was merely screwing my Geni tank on the SMPL because I was going out and didn't want to carry a the iStick with me.

@Thrasher - I was not holding the mod on my lap - I was actually standing up when it happened.

@alicewonderland - that may have been possible. You know the fire button on the SMPLE is a recessed switch (as against a reverse thread etc) so it is possible it my have been screwed in too far.

Not to make light, but I'm betting you got your cardio workout for the day huh?

I won't rag on the battery but I will suggest some Samsung or lg, several people here have shorted them and all they did was get hot and kill the cells

Over the years fire and fest have racked up several explosions

Honestly - I am not looking for sympathy although I do appreciate it. But telling me these things are for people who know how to use them is not helping me at all. Tell me why, tell me what to look for, tell me what to avoid. That yes would be helpful and informative. And that is why people come here - to learn. If whatever is written here is helpful to others who might read it than that is something positive.

I think the basic lesson here is if your going to use that type of mod make sure whatever your putting on top of it has an adjustable center pin that protrudes well past the threads of the atty.

I ONLY use my Derringer with my SMPL. They seem like they were made for each other. When I bought my SMPL from (???) I read specifically about the need for an atty that has protruding center pin. And the vendor when on to say "DO NOT USE KANGER OR ATLANTIS SUBTANKS, ETC..." The Troll also works well with SMPL. I tried the Rogue, and noticed right away it was having a little bit of an issue connecting. That was enough for me to scratch that plan. So glad the OP lived to tell us about the experience. A very good lesson was learned. It could have been so much worse.

There really isn't anywhere on this type of mod to put an insulator. That would require a super long 510 on the atty to get past the insulator as well.

Where the atty screws in is basically just a threaded hole.

Maybe having a super long 510 would keep the accidental using a device not made for it from happening? If it don't fit..... Can't use it.
