I'd miss ECF.

I'm a food man. I can do without television. I hate it mostly. Videos are fine. And, as much as I'm on this dammm thing, I can do without the computer. But I would go just a bit crazy not being able to stop by the store and pick up a pack of snack cakes or bag of chips! I eat constantly, so this is going to be a legitimate issue.

I have been looking at houses. Finally found one and was gathering all the needed paperwork for the finance people. Finally got that all together and have been pre-packing up the house for the last couple weeks.

We are listing lots of stuff on craigslist and getting ready for a yard sale to help thin out some of our stuff. Cant wait to get moved into the new house and get settled in.

I am more prepared for leaving the house for good and surviving outdoors. My question, who is preparing/prepping their house for long term economic collapse? Do we want/need a thread for prepping the house? Do we need a list for people on what items to stock up on? i have been watching those extreme coupon folks on youtube and watching some of the prepper vids there as well and I am sorry to say, I am no where near stocked up as i need to be.

I think that I'm marginally prepared for house bound crisis'. We have water, top ramen, canned beans & propane for the stove.
We are still lacking in the weapons department, but I do have plenty of large rocks to toss.
I would still like to have a store room full of groceries like the Mormon women on the youtube videos, but we just don't have the room...

I am lacking the food and water, but got the weapons covered.

I think it would be good to have a thread on how to store food and supplies in the home environment. I'm a renter, so a severe event will make me homeless, as I'm sure the owner will have others they will need to give aid to. Ours will have to be augmented for portability though; and I'll either have to get a hypnotist to train my wife to stop waiting until we are out of everything before needing to go to the store, or just hide supplies so she is unaware of it, LOL. Until we got married, I always had 3 months worth of food, and 3 days worth of water, but I live in Oregon, so water is easy to find most any time of the year in close proximity.

OK, another question.

You have a gun cabinet that will hold a dozen guns. (for this question we are only talking long guns- handguns will be a future question)

Not just strictly Z-day survival, but all around use, what guns do you stock your cabinet with? Keep in mind, these are for all around use-hunting, target shooting/plinking, easy access to ammo, zombie survival etc. These will be the only 12 guns you can have, what do you fill your cabinet with? try to keep at least 10 of them reality based, but 2 can be fantasy guns. If possible a short explanation for your choices.

1) Ruger 10/22 target model in stainless/synthetic (always my #1 gun choice).
2) M1 Garand in 30-06. Yes it's limited to 8rds per charge but that may help psychologically with the 'make each one count' mentality. Plus it's rugged, accurate, and the 30-06 can be loaded for just about everything that walks on 4 legs in North America (and it's shown it's effectiveness against 2 legged animals quite well already!).
3) Mossberg 5xx shotgun in 12 gauge. Reliable under the worst of conditions and shotguns are almost as versatile as the 30-06 when it comes to tailoring a load to your intended target.
4) FN FAL in .308. Semi-auto, rugged and reasonably accurate. Also easier/cheaper to find than something exotic with a 'Made in Germany' stamped steel construction. Yes, I've fallen out of love with H&K...
5) Remington 700 chambered in .223/5.56 NATO and the biggest and best scope I can lay hands on. Why?!?!? Because there will be a TON of ammo for it and a slug in the brain pan put's everything down. If you're hunting for meat, why damage the tasty parts or risk losing the trail. Put it down clean or miss and take it clean next time.
6) XXX Brand AR-15 HBAR rifle (that means 20" barrel not 16") for the times when you'll have to compromise between reliability and potential number of targets and can't risk the reload limitations of the 700.
7) SKS Sporter (the one that accepts AK magazines) for the same reason as the AR-15 rifle but uses 7.62x39 ammunition.
8) Marlin Camp 9/ Hi-Point carbine. Takes a common pistol round and steps it up in both terms of accuracy and take down power to effectively take larger game. I put the Hi-Point in there since the Marlin is getting pricey and harder to find.
9) Marlin 336C in 30-30. Great little brush gun and a very popular caliber. Easiest to find parts and ammunition for if you're in the Midwest by far! Almost as common as pick-up trucks. :D And yes, I was born and raised in the heartland.
10) This is tougher than I thought to come up with 12 guns... But I'd have to go with a Red Jacket Arms integrally suppressed Saiga 12 gauge. For those times when you want or need a lot of pellets with little noise. Borderline 'fantasy gun' though.
11) Hmm, two dream guns... Barrett M107A1 complete with suppressor and top of the line optics. .50 BMG ammo will be a LOT easier to find than exotic sniper rounds and with over a 1 mile effective range... far surpasses MY eyes. :D
12) FN P90 in 5.7x28. 'Fantasy gun' because ammo would be harder to come by or would have to be hand loaded. It makes the list due to it's small size and the potential for a pistol caliber to defeat Class II body armor. It puts a lot of 'oomph' into a small, reasonably light package.

I had more problems coming up with 12 than I thought!

I've been struggling trying to fill all 12 spots as well.

1) Ruger 10/22- if I have only one gun, this is it. Easy to maintain, cheap to shoot, extremely reliable, easy to modify, tons of aftermarket parts.

2) Mossberg 500, 12 gauge- I currently use a Mossberg 535 for my hunting needs because the 535 allows the use of 3 1/2" shells. I have the smooth bore longer bird barrel as well as a rifled slug barrel with scope, but love the available barrels for the 500 series- even the black powder barrel which just makes the shotgun extremely versatile

3) SKS (any country of origin) I have owned probably 20+ SKS's and have never had a bad one. My favorite (and most will hate this) is the chinese norinco's. The reason? Because the local pawn shops sell them for $160-$200. They suck for holding their value, but have never had one fail. I also prefer the standard 10 round magazine and the use of stripper clips. Not only is it lighter to carry more ammo vs the hi-cap magazines, they take up less space to carry to same amount of ammo, they are cheaper than magazines, they can be reused like magazines, and if you practice, you can load them ALMOST as quick as changing magazines. Another reason i prefer the stripper clips, once you have loaded the clip, you can toss it away, no worries. Magazines, you have to keep on you and reload them later. You can also buy ammo, preloaded on stripper clips for a few cents more per round.

4) AR15- This is one weapon I have never owned and do not like. I am not a fan of the .223 round, I absolutely hate the entire AR platform, BUT, for Z-day and survival needs, there are tons of people who love the AR and that means ammo will be readily available. For this reason alone, the AR made the list, but it might get booted for #5.

5) Ruger Mini-14- Like I said, not a fan of the AR platform, so the mini 14 might be a good choice. It still uses the .223 round. I havent done enough research to see if it will also use the 5.56 round. I know that a 5.56 weapon will shoot the .223 but do not think a .223 weapon will shoot a 5.56- I could be wrong there.

6) Ruger Mini 30- Reliability of Ruger chambered in my favorite round, the 7.62x39mm. No explanations needed.

7) Marlin camp 9/ hi-point 995/ keltec sub2000- or the reasons stated above by whynot. I added the sub2000 to the list mainly because of the fact it will fold in half and store in a small area not larger than a standard laptop bag. I have also emailed Keltec's R&D department and asked them to work on a 45acp version using Springfield XD mags. They responded that they would look into it, but dont hold your breath.

8) Marlin 30/30 lever action- This is currently one of my deer rifles and again like whynot said, ammo is plentiful, and the weapon is a good brush gun.

9) AR10- As much as I hate the AR platform, you just cant argue against the aftermarket accessories for the platform. Chambered in the .308, lots of power, and tons of accessories.

10) Mosin Nangant 91 30- Another surplus military rifle. We can buy them locally for under $120 still covered in cosmoline. A powerful 7.62x54r round + cheap gun = zombie killing fun.

11) Springfield M1A fully loaded- 7.62 NATO round (7.62x51mm or .308)- This gun has been on my wish list for a while so its one of my fantasy guns. If I ever get $2000 that I have no use for, this will be my first purchase.

12) My last fantasy gun is a standard military issue M-16, that my dad used in Vietnam. For my fantasy gun, I want the actual rifle he carried.
