I have had the Bannock and I love it and often make it over a camp fire when deer hunting.
I love smoked salmon and make up about 50lbs of it my self each fall!
Soap berry icecream???? you got me brother....I have not even the slightest clue! lol

They're bitter, but mix well with vanilla ice cream. You won't catch me eating oolichan grease though.

THis is from Health Canada

The First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada reports the following facts on smoking rates in First Nations and Inuit communities:

Fifty nine percent of on-reserve First Nations people smoke;
Fifty eight percent of Inuit in the north smoke;
Almost half of Inuit (46%) who smoke started smoking at age 14 or younger; and
The majority of on-reserve First Nations people who smoke (52%) started smoking between the ages of 13 and 16.

These statistics are from the First Nations Regional Health Longitudinal Survey 2002/2003, 2006 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, 2004 Baseline Study among First Nations On-reserve and Inuit in the North, Environics Research Group.

Sadly, smoking is only one a a few different addictions that need to be addressed.

Native and non-native politicians alike are too afraid to do what is necessary.

Doesn't matter where you or your ancestors were born. We are all humans. We have brothers and sisters living in poor conditions with serious health issues.

vaping to replace analogues is a start.

When I started this thread a week ago we (SloHand and Cobber) were in the middle of making a presentation on vaping. The word went out at the community health centre where I am President of the Board and on very short notice staff who could free themselves learned about vaping. Given that approximately 60% of our people smoke and we have close to 100 full time and volunteer staff. 5 starter kits (including the ED) were ordered and one week in things are going well. Tomorrow night I'll be making a presentation to the Board.

I can't believe I didn't see this thread sooner! You'd never know it to look at me but I have Native Canadian in my blood as well. Algonqin on my fathers side and Metis on my mothers. That is really as specific as I can be right now to be honest because I don't have access to the information, as much of my family just doesn't know. I am proud to know I have native blood and have always wanted to know more but alas, I just can't get any.

It was really great getting up there with Slohand and meeting Projectguy. I was surprised now well we were received. There was real interest in vaping.

Can't wait to go again!

Thanks a ton for including me.

Will let you know what the reception will be like at the Board meeting tonight.

You guys are amazing!!

I used to live in Thunder Bay and that was my real first experience with First Nations. I learned stuff in school and how they were poorly treated in a historical context, but I saw so much more when I was in TB. There was certainly a lot of activism at the university level, but at the community level it wasn't so positive. The attitude was so negative there at times that one of my room mates would always explain to people that he was NOT a native from Thunder Bay. My husband is from Sioux Lookout and the community there was even rougher. There were plenty of stories about a "nearby" town of First Nations people and it was hostile. If you were white, you knew not to go through that town, ever.

Back on track, the fact that you raised awareness and took action so quickly and are already converting people with kits is very admirable.

Thanks for the good words: There will be a lot to overcome as we go forward from government who wants to kill this community because they can't control it to our own people who are earning a living in the smoke shops on reserves. This is about harm reduction.

One at a time.....

Part of an email received today from the ED at our clinic

"By the way, Harvey will be getting in touch with you tomorrow to get a vaper. When we were out back I said instead of lighting up use my vaper. The short of it is he didn’t light up for the .5 hr. we were out there. Then he decided he wanted to order one."

This is assume Projectguy glad you are have so much success in such a short period. I managed to get a couple of kits to people at my office. But couldn't convince anyone to order their own stuff. Also didn't like that they had to pay tax for online purchases. :(

I think us Mohawks are well known for being just a tad stubborn.

We don't need the government to tell us who we are. Welcome to the thread Brother.
