The very first sentence of the linked article reads:

The American Cancer Society is fixated on damage control— diagnosis and treatment— and basic molecular biology, with indifference or even hostility to cancer prevention.

So the question popped into my mind, how much does cigarette smoking have to do with dying of cancer? I Googled "smoking-related cancer deaths" and one of the results led straight to the American Cancer Society web site.

"Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths." -- ACS :: Cigarette Smoking

Let us reason together:

  • The electronic cigarette, as we know, helps a large segment (~80%) of us users to stop inhaling cigarette smoke.
  • There is a compelling reason to believe that our cancer risk has been reduced by switching:
[*]Many sources state that cigarette smoke contains hundreds of carcinogens.
[*]Several labs have shown that vapor contains no substances known to cause cancer.
  • The ACS participation in trying to get e-cigarettes banned supports Dr. Epstein's allegation that the organization demonstrates "indifference or even hostility to cancer prevention."

Excellent article jj2. This same kind of elitism and "scientific McCarthyism" with unethical ties to the pharmaceutical industry and the "Above the Law" mentality is prevalent in the the AHA and the ALA as well. It would take a monumental effort for any of this to be adequately addressed....I just don't see it happening. No one has the stones for it, or could survive long enough to get anything truly done.
