So you may be seeing my Fused Quarts experiment in that first picture, That is still an experiment in process, see this thread to get a bit of an idea on that concept:

I just roll mine solid, that pic had a tube of quartz around it and an extra inner wick I had filled a hollow rolled wick with, those were experiments.

could you tell me more about your wick method? ive never seen a solid core with an outer wrap like that. i like the looks of this..

i cant see the picture though. on second thought this torch sounds like its too much.

I'm a little weirded out by the fact that there is a limit to how much you can heat ss before you start producing hexavalent chromium, so I try to do my torching outside and with as little heat as possible. I don't know what the temperature range is where hex chromium is released in the fumes, but it does happen with plasma cutting and welding. The less I have to torch it the better in my opinion.

I hear you there, I think that it partially comes down to the power you put into it. I personally think a bic type flame is a bit under powered, yet the tiny torchlighter I have had for years, I dont see a need for more than. Crank that up to a Chef torch, pen torch or mini torch and you are probably at the top end of anything needed, beyond that is overkill.

I do torch mine a number of times but dont think that flame could do much past Oxidization, but I imagine a propane torch etc would be way too much.
