Mann, that was a great post, very informative. I've never done DIY, but I certainly understand the distinctions you're drawing between eggy, buttery, etc. from my purchases of premades.

Tell me something. If I have an unflavored liquid, could I get some of the FA flavors and just add a drop or two, or does it really need to be very precise to get anything decent?

Edit: I think you answered this in a later post.

It took awhile for me to piece all this together, but custards can most definitely can be made safely! There's a slew of options out there now. FlavourArt has one of the most authentic custards (I've come to realize) and it does not have diketones. FA does 'eggy' very well and that is what a custard arguably should taste like, not butter! The most popular of all DIY/pre-made custards comes from Capella (their v1). I bought it just to see what it was like and it is so damned far from an actual custard I don't know what people are tripping off of. Well, yeah I do. The concentrate is devilishly good to taste, but a custard flavor it ain't. You can pit it up next to Capella French Vanilla and even their Vanilla Cupcake and you'll see that they are all one of the same -- diketone rich, buttery vanilla flavors.

Generally speaking, with an an actual real-world custard (I just made one the other day) the only thing really akin to 'buttery' is the fat from the cream and the yolk of the egg. But other than the mouth-feel that provides, it's not all of what's responsible for the taste (as in flavor). Make a meringue and you'll get all the sweet eggy taste in the world and it is typically without yolks -- but it is light and airy, not thick and rich. So the whole custard business in eliquid is (IMO) an aspect with texture of actual custards, not the flavor. You can get the taste safely of a custard for eliquid, but not necessarily the coated mouth-feel like eating one. One way you can come close is using butyric acid (like in TFA's Vanilla Bean Gelato), but that gets to be tricky from what I have learned and it can come off as odd and nasty if used too heavily -- almost like how artificial sweeteners often stick out like a sore thumb. I digress.

p.s. I don't know of a more beautiful concentrate than FA's Meringue! And like their custard, no diketones.

Hell yes, you can do that! People would just about flip finding out how easily that can be done with great effect. I buy my 'sample' FA flavors from Eliquidmart. 5 mL bottles are $1.69 and depending on the flavor, a 5 mL bottle of FA flavoring (assuming using a 5% base of flavoring -- which is about average or above for FA) can last you up to 100 mL of eliquid.

Yep. It's the mouth feel, and flavor to a slightly lesser extent. I describe them, in my notes to myself as "oily." And, it's not only the custards. Juices, whose taste I liked, such as Ahl Strawberry Shortcake (thanks Sue) felt/tasted oily. My mouth could be off though.

I am unaware of any numbers published by a reputable scientific source other than the NIOSH numbers for the workplace environment ( 65 micrograms per day for diacetyl and 137 for A P if i remember correctly ). I suppose you could extrapolate.

One of the things i always hated about every commercial custard i tried, was the heaviness and especially the mouth feel. And i don't think i'm alone ( although certainly in the minority ). I read someone write ( might have been Angelphyre ) in a different thread that the only custard she ever liked was the MOV diketone free version. Although i'm not sure if they could be classified as a custard rather than a cream.

I might order a couple from MOV and also Wlads version just out of curiosity.

It was called Prickly Fruit while it was still in the works. I wrote to Wlad and asked "how about you make a flavor out of cactus fruit and grapefruit" (I had been devouring a sherbet last summer that had grapefruit and cactus fruit in it) I'll be darned if he did not send me a bottle and tell me it was in the works. A few months later Alley sent me an email and said it was soon to be released and would be renamed.
I don't see Oasis. Am I looking in the wrong place?

there is something called 100 drops and you add 100 drops of stuff. 20-30 drops of flavoring depending on your taste and then the remainder in VG and PG depending on your ratio preference.
We get off on tangent DIY. Bill's Magic Vapor's 100 drop test. See the Flavor Apprentice thread. On my phone and late or would post a link. Each drop represents a percent. Great way to test DIY.

But Ahlusion is just good!

Oh yeah, not to pile on, but I got Memory Lane today and so far, it is either no memory of mine or no memory I want to revisit. I reserve the right to change my mind, but this is far different from how I didn't like Pineapple Brulee at first -- that was worlds better than this at first vape.

Back to my mixing studio to see if I can't create my own memory lane with that flavor profile. I just don't see why that flavor as it is made tastes NOTHING like what it is supposed to. Could this be a steeper? Don't know, but as it is, it would have to be a steeper for me to try give it another whirl.

I got Memory Lane and Pineapple Brûlée in my order a couple of days ago. I agree with you on Memory Lane. It tastes kind of soapy to me. Nothing like strawberries or milk. The liquid smells good, like it could potentially taste good, so hopefully this one gets better with steeping. I vaped it in a mini protank at 7.5 watts. When I took it all the way down to 6 watts it tasted better, but still not good.

Pineapple Brûlée on the other hand is great so far. I like the custard flavor. It's slightly eggy. I think Wlad did a great job with it. The pineapple isn't overpowering, I think it's a good balance.

Raspberry Mojito was also in my last order, a new one for me. I really like it.
I like Ahlusion's raspberry flavor. Limelight is a new favorite for me too.

for some reason my spell checker is making fancy marks on the word brûlée!

So what are the best/recommended ahlusion flavors? I love the blue fairy and shipwreck so far. About to place another order. I tend to like dessert Vapes but the two that I have tried aren't dessert vapes and thus far, I have been impressed. I have the banana foster and strawberry cake that I have sampled and they seem pretty good as well. Thanks

Just Criminal is a chocoholic dream. I second Lemon Vanilla Cake. One of my top 5's. Ahlusion is more known for fruits and Tea's than desserts and the fruits are spot on so pick a fruit you like. Mango Lassi is good. Summer Tide is Mango and Coconut, another fav of mine. Bobo Tea Coffee is good.

I agree and would add Pineapple Cream . It tastes like Pineapple ice cream.

Oh, okay. Luckily I am on the last 2 days of another coupon code. :rickroll:

Now I only have to figure out what to order.

DIY, ordering online? Mr. Mann, if I had that 10 to 60 deal, I'd be swimming in it. I already know what to order when my next coupon comes. Everything I like needs to be ordered in 6mg instead of 12mg. Those KFL's deliver the juice, and I need to throttle down the nic level if I'm going to vape as often as I do.

Funny thing, all the hardware I have, the KFL just seems to love the Provari and VW. Can't really tolerate the drop of a mech these days. That ppor 3 year old Provari about has no paint left on it. Good recco there, thanks buddy.

Edit: Hey, I hope our buddy YcY is surviving the "Shack" shakedown. Check in Y, hope you'll be OK!
