I have a ton of ... organic cotton but need to get some wire. No idea what to buy from where. So many different types and the ohms law thing confuses me. I hate numbers. My bf got some prebuilt coils when he first bought his Subtank Mini, but only has a couple left so I need to decide very soon.

I started with just Kanthal 30 gauge and used the mini screwdriver that came with most RBA"s.
Like this:
30 Gauge AWG Kanthal A1 Resistance Wire 50ft 0 25mm 8 36 Ohms ft 30g | eBay
you can also practice on a jewelry's screwdriver or this:
New Pin Vise Swivel Head 2 Chuck Micro Mini Hand Drill Tool Capacity 10x Drill | eBay
invert bit into vise backwards

So brand doesn't really matter as long as I get Kanthal A1? I've been told to start at 26 gauge. What does the gauge even represent?

gauge is the thickness of the wire. I find 26 gauge much harder to wrap AND wind around screws. Maybe go in the middle then and get 28.

The gauge of the kanthal effects the resistance...The smaller the gauge the more resistance... 26ga has less resistance than 28ga so you need less wraps of 28ga to get the same resistance.

Just one addition re: wire gauge that I didn't see mentioned yet: The larger the number, the thinner the wire. For example, 30 gauge kanthal wire is thinner than 28 gauge kanthal wire. (Sort of counter-intuitive.)

BTW, Lime Cream is really, really good FOOB. Haven't stopped since I popped the bottle, so I can't really say whether it's better than Lemon Cream.

Guess I should figure that out, huh? They're close enough taste-wise that I could get by with one of the two.

building is much easier than I expected. If you can make simple jewelry you can build. Takes practice is all and then the freedom of never having to buy coils is such a relief
I agree. It is almost "empowering". Hey, I made this coil I am vaping on and enjoying so much! You can experiment with different builds, ohms and what works for you with what equipment you have and what juice you like. Yes, there is a learning curve. But know that and go for it!!

Haha, that's like me right now with Alton and Yin Yang. Both orangey+. Alton with a hint of mint and YY with cheesecake. The YY is brand-new and I'm guessing the cheesecake will come out more later.

Dreamer, making your own coils is a lot easier than you might think. I was VERY reluctant; I had visions of disaster in every conceivable form. As many have said, it's a matter of practice - and it doesn't take much :). My coils aren't elegant, but they work. If you are a visual learner, you might want to pop over to YouTube and watch a few vids, or ask someone in a decent B&M to walk you through it. I'm guessing my investment was under $40 (Kanthal, cotton, Kuro Coil, ceramic tweezers and an ohms meter), and I can make dozens of coils! FWIW, my coils last a couple of months. Just dry burn, rewick, and I'm ready to go.

I'm a very visual learner so that's the main reason why I've not ventured in the rebuilding direction with no local vaping friends to speak of yet. There's a guy at my b&m that mentioned he would walk me through it I just need to get all my supplies first; I'd spend double the amount at their store. Then there's which set up to purchase and if it'll work on my Coolfire5 40w device. so many variables to consider that I've put it aside time and time again. Probably just start out with a troll dripper as I'm told that is easy to build on, but its ugly as :censored: to me lol. Neither of us vape over 25 watts so our mods should be fine.

I don't do ebay so I'll start price checking other suppliers eventually. Thanks for all the advice and info guys I really appreciate it.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I get far better flavor from small-chamber atomizers. A very reliable one that I've used for a long time is the Atomic. EHPro makes a terrific, well-built clone, which I just found for $14 with a quick Google search.

Ehpro Atomic rebuildable dripping atomizer from Aqua Vapor eCig North Carolina

It's not ideal for massive clouds, but is really hard to beat for accurate, concentrated flavor. Highly recommended, especially for testing flavors.
