This brings one of my favourite ramblings of George Carlin to mind:

"Where did this sudden fear of germs come from in this country? Have you noticed this? The media constantly running stories about all the latest infections? Salmonella, E-coli, hanta virus, bird flu, and Americans will panic easily so everybody's running around scrubbing this and spraying that and overcooking their food and repeatedly washing their hands, trying to avoid all contact with germs. It's ridiculous and it goes to ridiculous lengths.

In prisons, before they give you lethal injection, they swab your arm with ALCOHOL. Wouldn't want some guy to go to hell AND be sick.Fear of germs, why these ....in' pussies. You can't even get a decent hamburger anymore they cook the .... out of everything now 'cause everyone's afraid of FOOD POISONING! Hey, wheres you sense of adventure? Take a ....in' chance will you? Hey you know how many people die of food poisoning in this country? Nine thousand, thats all, its a minor risk.

Take a ....in' chance bunch of ....... pussies.Besides, what d'ya think you have an immune system for? It's for killing germs! But it needs practice, it needs germs to practice on. So if you kill all the germs around you, and live a completely sterile life, then when germs do come along, you're not gonna be prepared. And never mind ordinary germs, what are you gonna do when some super virus comes along that turns your vital organs into liquid ....?! I'll tell you what your gonna do ... you're gonna get sick. You're gonna die and your gonna deserve it because you're ....ing weak and you got a ....in' weak immune system!

Let me tell you a true story about immunization ok. When I was a little boy in New York city in the nineteen-forties, we swam in the Hudson river. And it was filled with raw sewage! OK? We swam in raw sewage, you know, to cool off. And at that time the big fear was polio. Thousands of kids died from polio every year. But you know something? In my neighborhood no one ever got polio. No one! EVER! You know why? Cause WE SWAM IN RAW SEWAGE! It strengthened our immune system, the polio never had a prayer. We were tempered in raw ....!

So personally I never take any precautions against germs. I don't shy away from people who sneeze and cough. I don't wipe off the telephone, I don't cover the toilet seat, and if I drop food on the floor I pick it up and eat it!Even if I'm at side walk cafe! IN CALCUTTA! THE POOR SECTION! ON NEW YEARS MORNING DURING A SOCCER RIOT! And you know something? In spite of all the so called "risky behavior ".... I never get infections. I don't get em. I don't get colds, I don't get flu, I don't get headaches, I don't get upset stomach, And you know why? Cause I got a good strong immune system! And it gets a lot of practice!

My immune system is equipped with the biological equivalent of fully automatic military assault rifles, with night vision and laser scopes. And we have recently acquired phosphorous grenades, cluster bombs and anti personnel fragmentation mines.

So, when my white blood cells are on patrol reconnoitering my blood stream seeking out strangers and other undesirables, and if they see any, ANY, suspicious looking germs of any kind, THEY DON'T. ..... AROUND. They whip out the weapons, they wax the mother....er and deposit the unlucky fellow directly into my colon! Into my colon. There's no nonsense! There's no miranda warning, there's none of that three strikes and your out bull..... First defense, BAM! Into the colon you go!"

Back when I was driving to New York every other weekend I would listen to George Carlin nonstop there and back. I remember one time I actually had to pull over on the side of the road because I was laughing uncontrollably and I could barely see the road because I had tears in my eyes. For those of you familiar with George Carlin it was the "Airline safety lecture" skit - for those that are not, if you feel like a good laugh:
Part 1
Part 2

RIP George Carlin, you were the greatest :(

Peanut bans are the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.... how the hell can kids build up a resistance if the antagonist is taken completely out of the picture. The amount of kids today allergic to peanuts is.... well.... NUTZ.

"Most" allergies (super sensitivities) can be altered by low dosage exposure to the allergen. Complete lack of exposure only reinforces the allergy and creates turmoil in the end.

Thank Jebus I don't have kids..... how the hell does one "grow up" without peanut butter & jam ??

Hah!! finally someone else with common sence... i forget the % but its somewhere in the 80-90% range... but that % of all food allergies are supposed to have been developped because of lack of sensitization... there is a smallish percentage of people who are born with complete allergical issues... but something like 80-90% of the population that is allergic to peanuts are only allergic because their parents refused to expose them to allergens and their bodies never learned how to develop the antigens required... this is due to the misconception that newborn children have less powerful immune systems... when in fact its the exact opposite... if you're going to expose a human being to allergens, at birth is the prime time to do so... after a year or so (forget the exact range) the body stops learning how to develop antigens and anything it hasn't been exposed to, in some fashion or form, it will have to fight with the existing antigens...

my ex-gf is a prime example... because her brother and sister and her uncle have allergies to peanuts... she refused to let her child even be in the same room as a peanut until he was almost 3... and SUPRIZE, F'ING SUPRIZE... HE'S ALLERGIC...

me, on the other hand... my ex-wife and i exposed our daughter to every food allergen we knew of... not all in one day... but from about 6 months on, we let our daughter try a small taste... just a smidge of each of the allergens... then we watched her intently for the next few hours and waited a few days/ a few weeks before trying another allergen... for example... we tried peanuts... first... we opened a bottle of peanut butter near her and let her smell the contents... then we just handled peanuts and rubbed a finger on her lips... then we touched her soother to the top of peanut butter... then we let some actual peanut butter get onto the soother (as opposed to just the surface oil in the peanut butter... by the end of 2 weeks... we were 100% sure she was not allergic to peanuts... and we were also assured that should she have actually had an allergy, the dose she would have recieved would only produce a mild allergic reaction (even with deadly pb allergies, opening a jar of peanut butter near the allergic person can only cause mild symptoms, which are still serious, but not capable of killing them quickly... definately not before getting to the hospital...

and guess what... she doesn't have a single allergy...

Having said that... there ARE allergies out there that are real and i acknowledge that! when i was a kid... in all the school systems i was in (and I was a base brat moving from city to city every 2-3 years so i've been to more schools than the average person), i can only ever remember ONE child who had a peanut allergy... and that was a BIG DEAL, we knew exactly who that person was and if we had a pb&J sandwich we KNEW to wash our hands very carefully before touching anything or anyone... just in case... we didn't wanna kill the kid...

BUT now... my daughters daycare... DAYCARE... has a dozen allergen kids... its only 5 classrooms... mebbe 100 kids total... and more than 10% of them are deathly allergic to something....

to me, and this is JUST my opinion... any parent that doesn't expose their child, in a responsible and careful way, to allergens is just as guilty of child cruelty as one who beats their child... their protectionism causes their child to have to live a life of fear and illness... the worst that can happen is your child has a REAL allergy and you rush the child to the hospital for treatment... and we would, within a generation or two, be back to the old way of one or two allergic kids the odd time as opposed to having a significant % of the population be allergic to food allergens.

again, my honest and biased opinion, just as valid as anyone elses and this in no way invalidates your right to have your own opinion, whether is disagrees with mine or not.

Peanut allergies actually only affect a very small amount of the population 1.2% of children and 20% out grow it by the time they are six. (AAAAI - American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology - www.aaaai.org stats)

So there really isn't a lot of information or studies done on it. I know of families that have one child allergic and the other kids are labeled with it too even though they have shown no signs of an allergy.

.. this is due to the misconception that newborn children have less powerful immune systems... when in fact its the exact opposite...

I agree with your opinion Jay but just want to clear something up ....newborns have an "immature" immune system - obviously we are not born with a full defense system ready to go - our defense is built over time with increased exposure to antigens.

Newborns who are breastfed receive a number antibodies from their mother's milk which helps to boost and strengthen their immune systems. I've always been a strong proponet of breastfeeding because the antibodies derived from mother’s milk are necessary for maximizing immune system function, maximizing intelligence, and protecting against immune system disorders, allergies, and even cancer. The child’s immune system is still underdeveloped until the age of two, the same age when the digestive tract seals the leaks (spaces between cells) designed to allow the mother’s antibodies access to the bloodstream. So picking the age of two as the length of recommended breast-feeding is not just a haphazard guess, it matches the age at which the child is no longer absorbing the mother’s immunoglobulins to supplement their own immune system. Nature designed it that way. I have four strong, healthy kids who very rarely get sick and haven't exhibited any symptoms to allergies. In fact, in 15 years, I have only experienced one ear infection.....one kid, one time...and that was over 11 years ago.

Peanut butter? My household goes through at least 3-4 kg of pb per month.

cactus...

that's correct... its immature and hasn't developed the antigens required for battling most allergens... however the infant immune system is the most capable of learning and fighting back and developing immunity to allergens.

my explanation may not be the most descriptive or scientific, but the premise is there... a young child is better able to develop immunity than an older one is... and an infant that is not exposed to allergens early is one that is far more likely to develop allergies...

I did also read once that you could raise a child in complete sterillity and they would still develop full immunity if they're breastfed but i can't remember if it was a scientific opinion or just an individuals opinion.

Sounds like we are going back to the whole "spare the rod spoil the child" bit but with a deeper meaning. Myself, I grew up beside a farm, I am the son of a fisherman and I work on a warship. I was never sheltered in my life from dirt, and have surely consumed many inedible products over my life so far. I have no illnesses, allergies or any other major medical malfunctions. (not counting lost braincells to sports injuries, work related accidents and teenage years) ;)

LOL ... don't get me started on spare the rod spoil the child...

while i'm not a proponent of child abuse... i do believe that children that are not punished/rewarded in a balanced manner is the reason why we have such widespread youth crime in this day and age... most kids these days in cities (more-so than in rural areas) are completely convinced that they can do whatever they want with complete impunity!!

Our grandchildren, aged 5 and 7 were over here with my son yesterday. It was time for them to go home and they were told to get out of the pool. Our son told them at least 3 times to get out of the pool and the 5 yr old was ignoring. I went to the end of the pool, where he was, and took him out of the pool. He has meltdown, screaming and yelling at me, then he spit on me!
 and my son did nothing!

If that would have been my kid, he would still be in his room and only allowed out for meals. Our son was told not to come back here today.

Crazy. I would have pulled my daughter out of the pool after the 2nd polite request. Meltdown/spitting = apologize NOW or not coming here again.

Don't wanna eat? Fine, no TV.
Don't respect others? Fine, you play alone.
Meltdown? Awesome! Time for a nap.
Etc.

She's 2 and people say she's very well behaved lol

Wow!! My kids would not DARE pull a stunt like that!! That type of behaviour would be cause for being grounded for at least 2 weeks (in their room, no computer...books only -- we don't have tv, so can't take that away, lol) and then until such time as both a verbal and written (very detailed) apology was made! And, if there were ever any future visits, it would be a requirement that said child would need to seek permission in advance (via phone call) from the hosts to use their pool again (this would no doubt require complete agreement from said child to follow rules imposed by the host/hostess with respect to the use of their property/equipment). Yeah...I'm pretty strict when it comes to behaviour, especially when visiting!!!

I don't raise my hand to my kids, but I also don't make empty promises/threats. They know and understand what is expected from them and also know and understand what the consequences are for undesirable behaviour. Plain and simple, they lose privileges....and let's face it, besides food, water and shelter, EVERYTHING is a privilege.

ETA: I very rarely ever get to 'three' when counting....and yeah, I still count, even for my 15yo, lol.
