You can get the Journeyman, R&R Manufacturing's other mod offered for sale, in a 3 mL bottle size.

Greetings everyone,

Well it’s been almost 2 weeks since I got my Ali’i and I wanted to post a follow up update. I am going to try to cover each area, if applicable, I previously discussed as well as some new items.

Equipment and Juice Currently Being Used on Device

I am still using just a standard 18 mg Dekang PG juice and one 18 mg Tasty Vapor (15% VG) with a Joye 510 atty with a Super T “Wide Mouth” drip tip.

Juice Feeding System

Well so far so good, no leaks whatsoever. The way I have been feeding is just push the bottle until I see some starting to come out at the atty bottom, let go quickly and then suck a little (I know that’s what she said) to get any leftover juice remaining in the atty. So far I haven’t gotten any juice on the lips or in the mouth even by doing this or when excessively feeding the atty. The pressure when pushing to feed juice isn’t much and doesn’t seem to get harder as it gets lower it just takes an extra second or two to feed.

I have read another post where someone had some leaks and “I believe” this was due to not having the teflon tube inserted all the way into the silicon tube. It’s not hard to take the tube in and out but you just push the tube up into the silicon tube until it won’t go anymore and you are good to go. I have changed out juices at least 3 times and haven’t had any issues thus far.

The main question with this feeding system and others is will it get all the juice from a bottle? I can say so far Yes, you can see from the pics below. It is really hard to get a good picture but I can tell you when it got to the point where no more juice was being fed I took the bottle out, took the picture and then turned the bottle upside down, waited a little bit for any residual juice to flow down and squeezed. I got 2 drops and then a couple air bubbles. Even after doing that and looking at the bottle it looked like there was some juice in the bottle but I tried this ritual again and no juice would come out when squeezing.

The other main question with these types of feed systems is won’t gunk or unwanted stuff flow back into the bottle when it pulls the extra juice back from the cup? So far this isn’t the case, I took a picture as my juice was getting low and used a small flashlight so you could see if anything extra was in the bottle and I couldn’t see anything. This is the Dekang juice and has a normal tan\brownish color.

I’ll put a little description below each pic to explain what I was trying to illustrate.

Tilted bottle before I went to drip out the remaining juice left. Tilting it was the only way I could show exactly how much juice was left

View attachment 19845
This was after I dripped the remaining 2 to 3 drops from the empty bottle, it looks like there is juice left but I couldn’t squeeze anymore out of it

Changing \ Refilling Juice Bottle

I have changed out the juice bottles 3 times already and it wasn’t difficult at all. As I listed above, the only trick is making sure the teflon tube is inserted all the way into the silicon tube, otherwise it could leak. Where the tube is inserted in the bottle, it is a snug\tight fit and there has been no juice whatsoever around the tip, bottle threads or in the device.

I believe you can also change out a bottle by just removing the teflon tubing from the bottle but just be careful as there might be a couple of drops remaining in the tube that could seep out.

The device comes with an extra bottle and pre-drilled tip so you can just swap out with another bottle or just refill the one you were using. Also you can order extra teflon tubes and bottles from Ryan, see post below but he also provided instructions on how to drill out the bottle tips, using a 3/32” bit.

Cleaning

So far I haven’t really needed to clean but when I change out the bottle or switch juices I just use a paper towel to wipe off and out the catch cup and atty connector. I also use some compressed air just to give it a good clean as well as to shoot into the feed tube in the atty connector.
Another tip I read was that you can use some warm or hot water and squeeze that through the feed system to also clean out.

Battery Life

I think this still depends on what type of batter you use but I am still just using the 18650 AW 2200 mah batteries I got from Lighthound.com. I am getting 2 days easily and swap out then. I test them using a multi-meter and the lowest voltage I have seen when I swap is around 3.82 volts. Again I usually take a toot every 30 minutes or so.

Button

Still working fine, I think it only didn’t fire one time but it wasn’t like it just sat there it was more of a delay fire. When I do my weekly clean ritual, I just shoot some air around the button.

Appearance\Quality

Ok, gonna hit some new areas on this section based on other reviews and comments I have seen as well as my observations.

About the covers, mine are a little loose and when I say that I don’t mean they feel like they are going to come off, what I mean is there is a little play when you move back and forth a little. I did ask Ryan about this and they do this to accommodate those people in different climates just in case the wood swells. I did read other reviews on other devices and one such device did swell and got stuck and the covers wouldn’t come off, so I can only assume this is why he did this. He did also advise that I could send it back and they could fix it so there was no play at all or that I could try to fix myself and gave me some ideas.

As for the wood being stained and how many coats, I believe I read that the outside uses 3 coats and the inside uses 1 coat. From looking at mine I can see the outside is really shiny and the inside is somewhat shiny.

The only small blemish that I see on my device is there is a small piece where the staining chipped a little and I am talking about maybe a centimeter in diameter. Again this is no big deal to me and to me it adds character but I am sure if I asked, that Ryan could fix as this is how it was when I got it but to me it’s no big deal but I did want to mention it. I posted a picture of this below.

Customer Service

Again I can’t say enough about how helpful and how quick Ryan is on responding to not only questions\concerns about the device but also is willing to help out with just about anything.

I have always had great luck not just with Ryan but with all the suppliers I have done business with and to me that is what is so unique and great about vaping, everyone is always willing to help.

Well I think I have covered everything that I wanted to or could think of. I know this review\impression is just my opinion and please understand that, there are soooo many great devices out there and what works and is enjoyed by one may not be by another. I am interested in increasing my collection and trying out other box mod devices and I will always give an honest and fair review. If I have any issues I will always first reach out to the supplier to resolve and not just deliberately post something without first trying to work things out. If I had the money I would probably buy every box mod out there as I just prefer box mods vs. the tube mods but that’s not saying they are better or worse, that's just my preference. I think the most important thing in any device is that it work and works as advertised. I can say definitively so far that the Ali’i mod does that and that is what I like, I like being able to put my bottle of juice in there and not worry about having to constantly re-drip, fill carts or cartomizers, etc.

I will continue to post follow ups but not sure the frequency so feel free to ask any questions and I’ll do my best to answer.

Once again, great job, and outstanding review. While I'm not happy seeing the finish coming off within two weeks, the important thing is that the device is still working exactly as advertised. Keep up the good work on your reviews, and I will keep waiting patiently for my VV Ali'i to come...well, not patiently, but I will wait. Can't wait, have to wait.....

Thanks Burto that means a lot as this is my first forum impression\review and follow-up, the finishing didn't come off within two weeks, it came like that. I didn't want everyone to think it is chipping away or anything, and it could have gotten that way in transit due to the heat or something else? I am sure if I asked that Ryan would and could fix it but it doesn't really bother me. However I did want to point out anything I noticed, even smallest of details.

oops I meant on the waiting list, not necessarily the next run, matter of fact I have no idea how many people are waiting for this device perhaps R&R is backed up for a year or two? Does anyone know how far behind they are?

Not sure, just check the other thread (see below) and there usually are updates. This week the ordering wasn't opened up but Ryan said they should be open for orders this next Friday.

Excellent job on the two week follow up and wanted to drop a line and let you know it's appreciated. Helpful pictures and descriptions of major points. As others have stated....we wait....gotta wait...good to digest these reviews in the meantime and, for the mere fact that you took the time and effort to include such minute details, I can fully appreciate all of the your critiques in an honest context. I think that the review after a period of honest usage is very important and helpful. This one coupled with your first impression is fantastic and really does hit the major marks.

One question, what is your daily usage? IE. do you bring it with you to work, out and about, etc?

Thanks Drumonron, I appreciate the feedback and comments, tried to incorporate anything and everything I could think of as well as what everyone might\would be interested in.

As for your question, on daily usage, I would say I use it all day pretty consistently. I can use it while at work so no need for the traditional vape breaks. I was going to put the Vaping on the Go section back but nothing to really report. When I go out it is usually only for a couple of hours so I just leave it at the house and wait to vape until I get back. However I might be going to a casino this week so I will definitely be bringing it then and will post the results in my next update.

Thanks for the great review!

I'm curious, you say when you go out, you usually leave it at home.

How does the size compare to a pack of cigs? We all have spent years with a pack of cigs in our pockets, I'd assume. Is the Ali'i much larger?

Can you take the atty off, and carry it in a shirt pocket, or do you think it would drip with the atty removed?

Just ordered one, and I certainly plan to use it at home as well as everywhere I go, so I was wondering what keeps you from taking yours on the road?

Thanks again!

It's about a 1/4' taller, 1/4" narrower, and about the same thickness as a pack of cigs (Marlboro Lights box).

Yes you could carry it in a shirt pocket if you don't mind the weight. It's more heavy than a pack of cigarettes. No, it's not likely to drip or leak...

It's nothing against this device as to why I usually don't take it with me, that is just how I am. Even before I had this device I didn't take out my Riva\Ego. When I smoked analogs I also wouldn't smoke when I was out and about unless I was going somewhere for more than 3 or so hours. So please don't take me not taking it out as it is due to the device, just my way of vaping and how I used to smoke.

I did finally take it out and about when I went to the casino this past week and it worked fine. I wore a shirt with a regular pocket in the front and it fit fine with the atty and smaller drip tip I use. I know some shirt pockets are smaller and in that case you might would want to take off the atty but in my case it worked great.

I also made sure to turn it off when it was in my pocket just to be safe but don't feel it would have mis-fired but figured better safe than sorry.

I think if you have a pocket with a button it would be even better, as T^2 says it does have some weight to it and I was worried if I bent over it might fall out so I just made sure to hold it close to my chest when I had to bend over.

As far as dripping or leaking, it didn't. Even after I fed the atty and put it back in the pocket there was no juice that came out. Now if you don't have the atty on it there might be some that could, some being a few drops but that just might be a possibility?

Hope that helps,

Would like to add a SOLID 3ml bottle version to the arsenal. I have a couple of Wetboxes but the switches make me nervous.

Mike, the Ali'i is quite a bit smaller then the full sized Reo so I don't see a need for a smaller version with a 3ml bottle. The contours of the design make it feel even smaller in your hand. One thing I noticed about 3ml vs 6ml bottles is that the 3ml bottles seem to be made of thicker plastic and are harder to squeeze. Also, for those who are worried about this mod being fragile, I take it out with me every day and even use it while playing golf. It is in the same pristine condition today as it was when I received it two weeks ago.

Can you tell me which wood combo your Ali'i is?

I realize the top/bottom and spine is Ebony. What wood are the door panels?

Thanks!

Shel

African Bubinga, and feel free to ask any other questions that I didn't cover on my reviews. I can't believe I didn't put what type of wood colors, whoops :)
