Raidy, I’ve been thinking about using soder wick for this very same purpose. It looks like a flat braided copper strand but when you look closely it can actually be opened up in a cylindrical shape.
It should also be possible to oxidise the copper with a high heat butane flame to form a 2CuO layer. Off course it is much easier if the braided wick is already in a conical shape - and it wicks perfectly! Busy oxidising one right now.....
(Have been using the wick container as my "on the go" nichrome holder.....)
Do you think it could work?

Might work but early on raidy mentioned the "benefits" of stainless steel most being that it is already heavily used in the food industry and especially for high temp (grills) environments.
I don't know what or how copper might react to the temp and juice.
I found another source for 400 mesh - Bellville Wire Cloth Co, Inc - wire cloth, wire cloth, wire mesh, woven wire, stainless steel wire mesh, mesh wire, woven wire mesh, wire mesh basket, wire mesh screen, woven wire cloth, stainless steel wire cloth, wire cloth screen, wire cloth strai
400 X 400 mesh 12"X12" is $49.95

I was having a hell of a time finding 400 mesh, I found 250, 325, and 500, but following a lead for silica rope I ran across http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?partnum=92405T17&pagenum=391 It's not cheap, but I like the idea of being able to try all different sizes of mesh.
Wohooo, my Kanthal and mesh should be here next week, I dusted off my mill last night(one of these days I'll put a cnc kit on it lol), I'm ready to go![]()
