If you cant lift the grate off yourself, I would try calling the city and explaining that your very expensive property fell in. Surely they would send someone out to get it out for you? Its worth a phone call. Good luck and thank goodness you have a backup.

This is a very good idea. Calling the City department in charge will know the likely hood of where an object of that weight could have traveled to in the system. I know in my city they would try at some point in time. If it wasn't a solid piece of metal they would not have a chance. There is a chance, don't give up.
