CBS just ran a segment on dangerous flavors (Diacetyl) that cause popcorn lung. We've known about that for years. Still, it's good that they are informing the public about how not to vape.

Maybe vape hardware and juices should come with a fact sheet that details all the bad ways to vape and what happens when you do.

Well, if we've known for years, why is this a "new danger". And I'd be interested to find out why it was this ONE kid out of millions of vapers that got popcorn lung. Specifically, what was he vaping, and where did he get it. Even back before we knew diacetyl was a possible issue, there were no documented cases of popcorn lung in vapers. More sensationalism. :nah:

They have air time to fill and after the recent lung scares they need to reiterate what others already know. If there's one out there thinking about vaping bad stuff maybe CBS will save a life or a lung.

Not everyone is a member of a vape community like ECF. Someone's got to pass on the vital info.

If it makes you all feel any better the AMA is getting absolutely trashed on their FB page over all of this. There's vapers on all or their posts shooting from the hip with the facts and they look like absolute fools for making this statement.

Same on Twitter. Grim Green and Mike (SMM) are very active there, as well as others. Plus, unlike Facebook, it’s possible to get some bots removed- and the fewer anti-vaping voices there are, the less misinformation is spread.

And I do find I can educate a few people along the way.

Who's still selling flavors with diacetyl?

Lots of flavors still have diacetyl. And some of us are fine with vaping it.

Article on diacetyl: Diacetyl Vape and Its Effects on Your Body. No More Confusion!

From the article: To add some perspective here, studies have shown that when diacetyl has been detected in vapor, it was measured at a high 9.0 micrograms. The diacetyl level found in tobacco smoke has been measured at 335.9 micrograms. Cigarette smoke exposes tobacco users to exponentially higher diacetyl levels than e-cigarette vapor that contains diacetyl.

Good to know! Although the only flavoring I use anymore is vanillin. Don't know if it has diacetyl in it, and don't much care, either. As you pointed out, tobacco smoke is worse--and that's just one of the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke.

I guess you are too new to have been here when it seemed all we talked about was diacetyl. We hashed and rehashed that one for a long time.

I was here 2014-2017, as Taxguydave. I remember diacetyl posts by the dozens, even in non-related threads like "Tootle Puffers".

*nods* That's why I really want to know what this kid was vaping. You'd think after this amount of time, if diacetyl was a concern, someone, somewhere, would have gotten "popcorn lung" before now.

I think the AMA is afraid of losing customers, or patients! Less cancer and heart disease caused by smoking means less disease...less doctors needed. Too bad! We feel better and we aren't sick!

That 15-18% say those things that the media want to hear.

For what it is worth...

15-18%
In fact, it is estimated that only 15-18% of doctors in the US are paying members of the AMA. In one study conducted by Jackson and Coker, only 11% of physicians who responded believe the AMA stand for the views of doctors.Jun 9, 2015

I recall workers getting popcorn lung from diacetyl.

4 major popcorn makers to drop toxic chemical

I refused to join that leftist organization when I was in practice. I couldn't ever say that their viewpoints and mine agreed on just about any topic. This is just one more example. Yes, I'm a (retired) doctor and I vape.
