I bought my daughter (shes 10) the Nextbook 7" for Christmas... Shes surprisingly to me an avid reader. I looked at the Nook and Kindle and couldn't decide, even tho we frequent our local Barnes & Noble w/Starbucks :)
My wife told me she seen a Nextbook on HSN, so I looked at it and seen it streamed Netflix, I was sold! It should be here tomorrow...

Another thing I looked at was the file extensions that it supported for e-books. It has a deal with Borders, and that downside is there isn't one as close as B&N is but there's always the Internet.

About a year ago I bought the neatest little e-reader on eBay. It is an IPAQ that has several different e-reader programs installed on it. It was about $75, and I have been really happy with it. One of the things that I like most is that this reader is backlit, so I can read in bed without disturbing my husband or messing around with a clip-on light. I can download books from literally ANY site, and one of the programs on my reader will open it. It takes a SD card, so in addition to the books that are currently in the reader memory, I have over 1000 books on the SD card to pull up as well. It also plays wmv files and video files, so I have a couple of additional SD cards with music and video on them. It has been a really great find that I would recommend to anyone. I found it by typing "e-reader" into the search engine on eBay.

I have a Nook and I absolutely love it (And I highly recommend calibre for format conversions and to manage your library). Before e-ink displays, I always tried to use my various PDAs and smartphones to read digitally, but anything backlit just hurts your eyes after a while. Also, after using my Nook exclusively for book-reading for about 8 months, I realize that I don't miss feeling a real book in my hand as much as I thought I would. I really can't wait until color e-ink displays start hitting the market.

I tried to use a PDA for this too, but the battery life kills the idea. You get what, a couple, 3 hours?

I get between 4 and 7 hours depending on what display settings (brightness) that I use. I usually use it with the stand/charger though, because it holds the unit at the perfect angle on a tabletop, so the battery life is not really an issue (for me). I do have a handy 3-way charger that allows me to recharge the unit with AC, USB or with the car cigarette lighter, and it recharges fairly fast. If I am going to be away from home, I just pop my charger into my purse in case I need it.
