Last night this ad was played and replayed on MSNBC, Fox News, ABC News, CBS News, and CNN News, with many political pundits commenting that it was poorly conceived, written and acted, and was a stupid ad.

But I thought the ad was excellent, as Cain's campaign didn't spend a dime running the ad on TV (but rather just posted it on Cain's website), with every news channel giving the ad lots of play and commenting on him and the ad.

Also, I think the ad targets Republican and Independent voters who smoke, as well as those who oppose the anti-tobacco extremism that has been advocated the last several years by Obama's FDA, CDC, NCI (and now DOT), by many state and local health officials and by CTFK, ACS, AHA, ALA, AMA, Legacy, etc.

Here are some more weblinks of news stories about this ad
For Real? Herman Cain Ad Shows Chief of Staff Smoking a Cigarette - Garance Franke-Ruta - Politics - The Atlantic
Cain?s Smoking Chief of Staff Defends Video Ad - Lindsey Boerma - NationalJournal.com
Cain's bizarre new ad: Is it for real? - CBS News Video

And here's a new story about Herman Cain's past experience lobbying for the National Restaurant Association against indoor smoking bans, reducing the blood alcohol limit while driving from .1% to .08%, and increasing the minimum wage.

Oh, great analysis. I didn't even think of that! How do you get more coverage without spending money? You do something controversial. Clever indeed. It's a risky move, though. There could be a backlash since smoking has become so taboo. I guess they gambled that the bulk of people who might find it offensive are unlikely to vote for Cain anyway.
