Yep... that's what I do - just let it pass but don't force it cuz then you'll start clinging to them more. Hmm.... I wish I could become that aware that I can't sleep haha.... never reached that point yet but maybe because my mediation sessions rarely last more than an hour and I rarely do it in a distracting situation such as a bus.
the trick with controlling you day to day mind while mediating is dont see it for what it is and quickly move on. dont keep circling around them kind of like yep no and move on. or simple dont listen but that makes them bulid up and get worse. the best place i used to practice was on a bus. i ended up back where i started twice without knowing so i got off and went home with a very peaceful night sleep.

Edit: i have used Zen based and a chakra cleaning style then i usually do a Buddhist but by then i am either a hyper aware of everything and cant sleep for at least a day. or i am hyper calm and sleep days away .to Dc i understand what you mean i forund out i dont have any friend IRL they here just after money or attention.

Zen is different in that there is none of the "psychobabble" you mention - but then again DC and the other people who meditate analytically do find out things about themselves without dope.... I think it's valuable to look into your mind and confront your problems head on.
I used to get like that when I was *****, then one day I realised that all the psychobabble and 'understanding' I thought I had was somewhat of an illusion and had left me spiritually bereft. I opened the door from my mind, stepped out and discovered a whole world of free spirits:)

I think toning and chanting is just another way to focus your mind which I think most people would find easier to do than focusing on breathing....
I went to a psychic conference some years back, and they did a workshop on toning as a technique for meditation.

It was interesting. We all started chanting in one pitch, and we were told to change tones. As it developed, the harmonics went from consonant to dissonant and meandored in very interesting ways. Perhaps this is OT to a meditation thead, but it was a very interesting exersize, and it was interesting how tone can help one turn off your internal dialog.

Do you listen to music when you meditate??

I'm not sure if this question was directed at me since I was the last person to post when you asked this question, or if it was and open-ended question for all, but I will provide you with an answer.

I do not listen to traditional music when meditating. With some types of meditation though, I find it helpful if I have my computer play a steady drum beat or some chanting, otherwise modern music is just another unnecessary distraction (usually). Some exceptions include some Tuvan throat singing.

I can meditate through most music, and so can most other people who have been meditating for a while, because music usually doesn't help, at least in my opinion, with the types of meditation that I do. If you're trying to practice your discipline in meditation by attempting to meditate with distractions around you, the music could possibly help you with providing a suitable distraction while you attempt to meditate through it.
