@etma
I had actually seen some talk of the Damn vape Fresia, and was thinking it might be a good one to try, as if I just can't get the hang of MTL, it won't have been a total loss. I'll look at the Billet Box as well. Thanks!

@Vapedog
Thank you. :)

Sorry, "in a sec" turned into "tomorrow morning" ... good thing we aren't on a timeline, right?
So, as for specifics... I've already got a tool set, and some extra premade coils (employee at local shop recommended that for trying different wire types before buying a spool of wire I ended up not using... he was really helpful, too bad he moved and employees now have no idea about any of this), as well as the RDA and RTA I mentioned in OP.

The coils I have made myself:
  • 24ga kanthal, 30mm spindle, 9wraps, ~0.5ohm (with 2x coils)
  • 20ga fused clapton, 35mm spindle, 7wraps, ~0.25ohm (with 2x coils)
Have worked pretty good (kanthal gave me some issues, but worked it out). The premades have been really spotty, and I'm not really sure how to tweak them to get them to work properly (ohms can vary with wide margin from label AND each coil of the same kind). This is why I was wondering about spacing, and if that might smooth this some, as the pre-made are all contact. Also, the fused clapton coils I made came out with a slight arc/curvature to them, while all the premades are quite flat/straight across the coils, and I don't know if this makes any difference...

I have been running wattage mode, as I really have no clue what to look at or aim for with temp mode...

Batteries are 8x 18650 3000mAh 3.7v (LG iirc... got them when I first started and haven't had problems so never tried others). I have two mismatched that came with the SMOK mod I started with, but keep them out of rotation as my Wismec mod takes 3, and I was warned from mixing up battery-types. Charger is Nitecore i4, if that makes any difference.

Pics for reference (a few of my kanthal builds on top of premades case) :

These are LG hg 2 18 amp CDR batteries.You must not go higer than 155w.
Buy one more battery so you'll have 3 triple sets ,use a permanent marker at first set mark 1,next mark 2 etc.
This way helps not mixing batteries.Charge/discharge TOGHETER.

Use properly paired batteries.
Same Brand
Same size
Same chemistry
Same Mah rating
Same Charge
Same CDR

With TC/TCR/Temperature, 250°C max.

And if you have a wattage setting as well, this is like a preheat setting (initial wattage sent to coil until it reaches temperature). It just has to be set for your coil or preference. Higher gives you a hotter, harsher, denser vape. Lower gives you a cooler, mellow, less dense vape.

These builds have big amount of mass.In which atty did you installed them?
They require lot of power,more than 100w to work properly

Thanks for the continued feedback!

@Mordacai
I will look into it more and try the temp controls. Sounds like I'd be running at a lower temp as I'm less concerned with density and more with smoothness and flavor.

@greek mule
I have already marked 6 of the 8 as 2 sets. The two others I have been using in my tester (part of the took kit pictured above), but I will get another to make 3rd set and just use the two mismatched for that. The highest setting I ever tried much was 140w (on the TFV8 w/ Q4 coils), and I didn't care for that at all as it was quite hot, so not going above 155watts shouldn't be an issue.

I believe all the premades are SS... but it has been about a year since purchase, so I could be mistaken. Is there any good way to check this? I don't see any identification on the case...

I tried both of my own builds in both attys.
  • Wismec RDA - The fused clapton are currently in and working quite well, at 90-110w. The kanthal ran better at lower setting (80-90w) but preferred the other and switched back.
  • Skyhook RDTA - the kanthal seems to run better in this, works for (slightly) longer before issues mentioned in OP start. I prefer the hit on the fused clapton coils better, but will only get 2-3 puffs with them before issues arise. Used the same watts settings as with Wismec RDA.
It occurs to me that the Skyhook is really what has been giving me issues, the Wismec RDA works great, I just dislike its design (constantly redripping which requires removing the cap, which is quite tight-fitting to base...).

I'll make another post detailing the issues I've had with the Skyhook later to help keep it separate.

zemajXD, set watts lower for smoother vape due to Nicotines boiling point is 247°C. Watt calculator on play store gives good results for this, just input coil resistance and use number in purple colour at the top of the app as an initial starting point.

And maybe in the future you may consider a regulated squonker, Smoant Battlestar Squonker could be interesting and cheap.

But are you aware of fasttech? Online store in China with a ton of vaping goodies to choose from, with free shipping.

No need to space them.Dry burn your coils right after you install a new build until they glow evenly from center to edges.Since they are identical in dimensions you are fine.

Also, the fused clapton coils I made came out with a slight arc/curvature to them, while all the premades are quite flat/straight across the coils, and I don't know if this makes any difference...
Not of importance.

The coils in the weel-box I think they don't do TC.Probably are Kanthal and Nichrome coils.You can do TC using the fused claptons you made with one provisio:One or both of the wires used as core is/are ss wire.If so,in order to find the exact TCR vallue for the specific coils you go to Steam Engine and set AWG value and type of alloy for the wires used to make the fused claptons.You'll get the exact TCR vallue.Set that number at your mode at "temperature M1 or at M2 etc.But IMHO TC doesn't worth the effort.And Wismec devices don't do TC well.
