Another Stuck Switch

Ok so when i got the Protoge today i had a big happy face!!!

I let the batteries charge and put it all together and nothing worked

I tested each piece with a multimeter and and found that when i pressed the switch part (out of the housing) Current would not pass through it.

After reading a thread "Your Package has shipped" everyone was suggesting pushing the button harder... so i did so using my thumb and all worked perfectly... so i thought... now it wont shut off

My atty blew because i hadnt realized it stayed on for a minute and i smelled it burning so i unscrewed the atty and the battery (atty was super hot)

I have now read another thread and hope that i can send back my switch and get a new one


After waiting a week i will say one good thing...

the one large puff i took was phenomenal and i will look forward to using this device again once i get a new switch

My switch was sticking all day yesterday also- I put in a ticket but what I also did was repositioned the switch and so far it hasn't stuck. Hope it stays this way or I will have to send it back also.
edit - It still sticks but when I press it again it stops. I guess it will definitely have to go back also because now it won't go off. I'm very dissapointed.

All these occurrences of stuck switches has me a bit nervous. I love my Protege, and it is all I use any more. If mine were to go down, I would throw a hissy fit! LOL!

I'm thinking that as a preventative measure, I had better order another switch to have on hand. Perhaps a whole othe Protege as a backup. I'm pretty handy, and I have soldered stuff in the past.....how difficult is this to do on this little gadget? I haven't dug into it to examine, ad I don't want to just go prying anything off.....hate to damage a working unit here. Has anyone posted a play-by-play for doing the repair yet?

Cash has mentioned in other threads the approach to repair/solder the switch but I've yet to see any step-by-step or pics.

Would be nice to see that soon as a first line of defense.

Also, if you goof, can we still get a warranty fix???

I am shipping mine back on tuesday and he said i should get it right back... Dont worry guys, if the switch is busted the customer service will take care of it... Steve has been really really helpful!!

Hey TP ... Yours sounds like a misallignment ... Please do send this back so we can take care of it. When your switch gets stuck, does the button stay depressed down?

Hey Fresh ... We are hoping to rectify the situation so you don't need a backup. Re-soldering this switch really isn't too difficult. You need a solder gun and a little solder sucker, to suck the old solder out. I will post a how to video for the Prodigy and the Protege within the next week or so when I put switches up for sale. As far as fixing the USBpass -- This is something that takes a bit more skills and tools, because its pinned in place.

The goof part was referring to me goofing, just to be clear. I can be very dangerous with a loaded soldering iron

I'm hoping by doing all this planning and preparing I will reverse jinx myself and never ever have a switch problem ever.

What am I sending back? The switch or the switch with the housing combined?
I don't think the button was depressed down. I had it on my counter the other day propped up was cooking something and the thing just started burning up. I didn't hear it sizzle this time but I smelled it. This is kind of scary. So I dissembled it.

Mine just started having all these same problems... which sucks because its Saturday, and now I will have to go back to those crappy 510 batteries. I posted a ticket just waiting for a reply no I guess

When the switch is open (not pressed) I am reading about 50 - 100 ohms. (There is the problem)

Does puresmoker have these switches in stock?
If not does anyone know of an online source for a usable replacement?

I gave away my old 501 when this one arrived and have been reduced to a failing USB pass through and unscrewing the atomizer on the Protege.

Unfortunately, Steve has not yet chosen to put switch assemblies up for sale on his site. Perhaps he doesn't have enough extras.

The Protege is extremely well made and looks to be durable, but the weak link will always be the switch with a device like this. Even if you don't get a 'stuck switch' eventually it will have to be replaced. I for one would like to be able to buy a back up.
