OK...got a friend who is a pack a day smoker. He was very interested in vaping and decided to talk to his doc about it. And oddly enough, his doctor advised him NOT to start vaping...either quit all together, or keep with analogs.
I dont know the details of my friends health concerns. He mentioned that even as little as 5 minutes in a steam sauna will cause him to develope pneumonia. This, I am assuming, is due to his asthma.

Does anyone who has asthma vape? What are your experiences with it?

I have had asthma & COPD for over 30 years. I started to vape 5 months ago & after 30 days I was able to stop ALL my related meds. I have seen my pulmonologist as well as my primary care Dr. & the both highly approved of my switching to vaping. They both requested info on where they could send their other smoking patients & my pulmonologist had me do a demo for his office staff so they would be more informed. Your friend may have another condition & I would suggest they check with another Dr. before starting to vape.

Yep I have had asthma - occasionally, but was under control. My doc has advised me to stop using relievers now, and then phase out preventers now that I vape.

However, what you say above does NOT sound like asthma at all. Needs double checking by the docs. Maybe vapour/steam is just always bad for your friend.

Best of luck.

Well - let me say that I have allergy related asthma, have never even smoked one cigarettes, sell e-cigs, and thus have to test product constantly. Incidentally, I have not become addicted to nicotine, but I have to say, my lungs are crappy, and even vaping irritates them (though not even close to what 2nd hand smoke does to my lungs)

my doctors aren't sure what i have because i have no insurance cant afford the tests so they're treating me with advair samples and $4 meds i'm purchasing the pilot today and hopefully everything will be okay will let u know

I have COPD for 4 yrs now and have been on Advair and a nebulzer for all that time, once I stopped smoking ( 3 plus pks a day) I started, getting a better breathing pattern, I have not used Adviar, thank god I DO have insurance, cos Advair is some $350.00 w/o ins>> how people live w/o it scares me to death and I am so sorry you do not have ins, I only wish I could help, but I cant, Maybe the new administration will do something about the ins, for everybody

In the meantime, my breathing HAS improved and I do feel better from vaping I can do things I could not do, when I smoked like a machine
So thumbs up again for our vaping world

A late contribution to this thread.
I had seen it before but decided to wait contributing till I had something more definite to report.

I've been using salbutamol (gas propelled inhaler) and budesonid (preventive) for the last 20 years, with increasing intensity.

The last three years has seen my (ab)use of salbutamol getting crazy. 200 doses in 10 days and more recently just one week.

Since starting vaping (5 weeks ago) and totally dropping analogues (4 weeks ago) my need for using salbutamol has decreased radically. 200 doses lasted 18 days! And I'm sure that part of that use is habitual more than actually necessary.

I'm continuing with the preventive meds. I'm also allergic and don't see the need to provoke an attack just to try it out. Hopefully over time I'll be able to drop all meds totally.

My lung function is radically better. I can still get winded after considerable exertion, but a few deep breaths is now enough to get things under control, where as before that would mean a puff or two from my inhaler. The coughing has disappeared, although I of course have the occasional obligatory sore throat. I do still have a certain amount of lung congestion early mornings, but a lot less severe than when smoking.

I don't expect my lungs to be able to really start recovering for quite a few months yet, but this has been an encouraging start.

Hopefully this will encourage other asthma sufferers to make the switch to vaping, it is really worth it.

I have exercise-induced asthma.. a little running results in intense lung pain, inability to catch my breath, vomiting, lightheadedness.. and I'm in pretty good shape @ 135lbs.

I've only been vaping for about a week.. I've had two cigarettes since starting (former pack-a-day smoker). My lungs feel noticeably better - easier to breathe deep, and more lung capacity. I haven't tried running, but no problems with walking quickly for long distances. I use a straw-modded 510 which really packs a punch, yet it's never affected my breathing. Nothing but improvement.

Smoking causes cancer, breathing problems, heart attacks, and stroke. Secondhand smoke causes asthma and breathing problems. Get help quitting smoking from support groups, nicotine replacement therapy, and other medications.

I just got this off of Web MD. Nicotine replacement therapy is recommended. That is what vaping is.
Is he taking any other medications.
If your friend has any sense he will get off anologs, go to vaping, and go to a different doctor.
Any Doctor that would tell a person stay on analogs in no Doctor in my opinion. I really have a hard time believing what your friend told you. Perhaps he was mistaken? Perhaps a little worried about quitting smoking? See my "banner" below. This happened on DAY ONE vaping.

I haven't started yet but am very excited to. should be reciving in a couple of days. but to every one with asthma i feel your pain. everyone takes breathing for granted. smoking is killing me and i hate them... but still cannot quit, i am positive this is the solution. i know what its like to never feel better and constantly abuse the inhalers. advair worked great at first but then made me worse. one thing people may want to try is singular been on it for a week and feel great, from using inhaler 6 times a day to once and hopefully with quitting analogs i will be asthma free. good luck to everyone ITS TIME FOR A CURE!!!

I know what that's like. I wish you the best and you are in my prayers.

I have chronic atelectasis, the bottom lobes of both lungs have become spongy and collapsed. Back in the early spring I got the flu with some very heavy coughing. The doc said the coughing was actually helping the atelectasis. He gave me cough medicine but would only let me use it at night. Since I've started vaping, he can hear air movement in the lower lobes really clear now and I can feel a huge difference when I take a deep breath. For me it is making a huge difference.

Asthma flare-ups can still happen, any number of things can trigger them. But since I started vaping my symptoms are about 75-85% stopped, with occasional flares from allergenic triggers, dusts, mold, pollen, etc. But something that keeps me rather stable is doing deepbreathing or pursed-lip breathing, in through the nose and out through the lips, several times a day. And keep working to longest duration you can manage, both in breaths and out breaths. It really helps increase lung volume and relaxes muscles that interfere with airways. Also gives the diaphram more flexibility. All of these things help, but it doesn't make asthma go away.
Some meds may always be necessary to keep around, but I feel terrific compared to smoking! I'm even back to doing yard-work (hauling a heavy mower up a side hill will certainly help your lung volume), more energy, more alertness and memory function (I also have ADD!) just plain feel better. I have been able to get by with just an occasional Primatene tablet, with just a 12.5mg ephedrine dose to open airways. Have not had a severe "event" for about three months+. Knock on wood!

Maybe he should print out the study and bring it to his Dr.

Studies conducted in 1942 by Dr. Oswald Hope Robertson of University of Chicago's Billings Hospital showed vaporized propylene glycol inhalation in laboratory mice may prevent pneumonia, influenza, and other respiratory diseases. Additional studies in monkeys and other animals were undertaken to determine longterm effects, especially the potential for accumulation in the lungs
