I was looking at the vises made for tying flies and thought they might come in handy for making wires and wrapping coils. I've never seen one in person and I'm not sure exactly how the "jaws" are setup. Would they do the job nicely? Also I notice the prices go from $40 to $400+ I'm only interested in the low end but don't want to throw money away if they are useless. I basically want a solid base, adjustable jaws that hold tight but don't damage the wires or wicks. If anybody can shed some light on the subject I'd appreciate it. Also some closeup pics of the jaws would be nice too.

I used to tie flys and did have a lower end model. If memory serves, I don't think the jaws could hold the wires as they are made to hold fish hooks, and would probably slip out. Maybe glueing some kind of plastic to each jaw would do the trick. I like this idea though, would really help me. Wish I still had that vice to test with.

I've got one of the Helping Hands, its a nice idea but doesn't work as well as I'd like. It's what got me looking at the fly vises. Gonna try to find one locally this weekend. We've got a G.Loomis and Gander Mountain hope one of them have one. They seem to use an adjustable cam action for tension on jaws. I'm hoping to adjust once for wires, then after I make a batch adjust for wicks and get to wrapping. The wires are the most tedious for me as I bite my nails so it makes it hard to grip them tight while twisting.
