Thanks for those Right To vape links Kate,
will definately spend a bit of time looking around there,
will contribute if I can see anything I can add to.

It occurs to me that at those prices £440 set up + £75 per test
+ extra (probably a lot more) for interpretation/reporting,
it wouldn't be all that long before this (or that) community
could have paid for new equipment under own control,
with limitless testing capability.

GC equipment is not fantastically expensive & desk-top MS is the 'norm' now
(the 'company' I work for makes them both).
Not to serious about that, but it's a possibility.

I guess that getting the equipment would only be part of the cost. Wages, insurance, professional reference subscriptions, administration and other overheads would have to be taken into account. I bet they're licensed with authorities too.

It will be great if you add your thoughts at RtV Exo, I think you understand the chemistry really well compared with most of us.

Wow! That would make an awesome video DIY *hint hint*
From reading your post, I know it is probably beyond most hobbyists to think of doing.

It really isn't anything crazy, all ingredients are easy to get and while they may not design it, with a demonstration and explanation it shouldn't be a problem to DO, just need a little free time and some patience.

I suppose I could make a video this summer (finals next week), I'm sure some people would find it useful. I'll keep ya posted though.
Also if we are making a think tank I offer my services for whatever you need me for (as long as you can handle long rambling posts :p) Let me know~

I bet lots of people would find a tutorial or walk through video very useful Satire.
Vids are great
vids are fun
get one posted ... honeybun :p

The best set up we have for focusing thought at the moment is Right to Vape. Pick an area and steer it in a productive direction. It would be great if anyone with a desire to collate, collect, analyse, commission, etc information on vaping would join us there.

I, for one, would like to get the video although I understood his directions rather well after rereading some lines several times.

...Nicotine HCl...

I am curious though. What possible outcome would Nicotine HCl present to my lungs as opposed to plain Nicotine.

Also I spent a long time searching for a cheap nicotine supplier. I found ABCR (http://shop.abcr.de/product_information.aspx?product_id=44420&second_id=147329) in Germany. Its around $40USD (30EUR) for 25mL and they have bottles as high as 500mL.

On the other hand, a one pound bag of natural tobacco, now that the taxes went up, is around $30USD (unless I can find a cheaper source).

Could I get the equivalent amount of nicotine HCl from one pound or so? And what is the equivalent amount? How do I determine the equivalent "mg per mL" "rating", by trial and error then guestimate?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm planning on doing this and I would prefer a few more specifics.

P.S. Its beginning to sound like this should be moved to a new thread.
Edit: Sorry, I just found the other thread (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/diy-e-liquid/14607-nicotine-extraction-tobacco.html)

Nicotine HCl is not any more dangerous than "regular" nicotine, in fact most naturally occurring nicotine is in salt form, and I use the salt form because nicotine freebase decomposes very rapidly just from being exposed to air. The only thing the extra Cl ion does is make it more water soluble and stable.

As far as yield is concerned, there is a ****load of nicotine in tobacco (eat a cigarette I dare you). Estimates I have seen are between .5 and 3% nicotine by weigh of dry tobacco (giving you anywhere from about 200-850mg from a $2 1oz bag of rolling tobacco from a local grocery store). The cost-efficiency is really up to you, may or may not be worth it, I did it because I liked the purity of it compared to what the commercial suppliers seem to be using and I wanted to make sure I could make some in case of an Australia-like emergency regulation (plus I was out of juice and fiending :p). I'll leave the money and politics to the rest of the community, the lab is my domain.

Lol, the cats are a bit of light relief when we're taking ourselves too seriously. They break up heavy atmospheres with a bit of humour. That's the idea anyway but it might work the opposite way with people who don't like cats.

They're cute too ;)

Gotcha :thumb:
I'm not a cat hater...just didnt know what the scoop was on them. I agree that some of them are damn funny.
