I'm very new to vaping also. The first time, I OD'd the nicotine. Started with 18mg. That was way too much for me apparently. I normally smoke a pack a day, so I thought 18mg was what I needed. Its' different for everyone though. Some people can handle massive levels of nicotine with no bad effects. Anyway, I ordered some 0 nicotine juice to dilute the 18mg with, but decided to first try it on its own to make sure I wasn't having a bad reaction to the juice itself also. I noticed slight lightheadedness and headache if I take too many hits in a row, but nothing too bad. I decided to slowly ease into it too, to allow my body to adjust easier.
Another thing that helps is to read the new member info on how to vape properly. It's different than smoking and can help lessen some issues.http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html

Sleep was elusive last night. Probably because I sat at my computer chain vaping for about two hours before bed. I too notice insomnia when vaping before bed. I refuse to give up my vape so I figure I have two alternatives: vape only nasty tasting juice before bed and therefore regulate the amount I vape (NOT) or vape a lower nic conc. Bet you guessed my solution. I just got done rearranging all my liquids into nic strength and noted that I have more 12mg than 18 or 16mg. I frequently flavor an 18mg tobacco flavor with a 12 or 11mg flavor such as chocolate, coconut or even absinthe. I have had some awesome results from these mixes. I will now grab a few more bottles of 0mg juice and continue the mixing. With all the new stuff I ordered in the last two days (thanks a lot folks...this forum is to blame!:glare:) I will just reserve a tank for evening use only and make sure it is very light on the nic. Man, I do love my vape.

This thread has been very helpful I do appreciate all the great information. Thanks.

The most important question to be answered before any advice can be given is...
How much of what strength liquid did you vape?

If you vaped 1ml of 12mg strength, the answers should be very different from if you vaped 6ml of 24mg strength.
Less than 1 ml of 16mg liquid. Since my first night, it is getting a little better, although I have yet to receive the lower nic juices I ordered. Hope they come tomorrow - I am so ready to dump (or dilute) this first juice.

I did run to the local shop to buy a lower nic content liquid, and they had one at 6mg in menthol - different brand. However, that juice was un-vapable for me - it had a higher ratio of VG than the first juice and I had a really bad reaction to it. It made my head and throat feel thick and heavy and groggy... Like I had coated everything including my brain with oil or soot. SO weird.

Thanks everyone for the great responses in this thread - I think I've learned that I need a nic level of 12 or lower and a PG/VG ratio of about about 75/25. So that's good - now all I have to do is find a flavor or two that I like and I'll be off and running!

Oddly, after a day or two of vaping I never had any symptoms described here again, just those first couple days I got a little headache-y and cottonmouth, more water helped both. That's on 18/24mg juices, so I think the whole 'everyone is different' applies very much to this sort of reaction. I vape 100% PG when I can, seems easier on my body than high-VG mixes, but I know people who are the opposite, so it comes down to your own body and needs. Never noticed a lack of sleep from vaping 24mg before bed, but then again I can drink energy drinks before bed and not have trouble falling asleep so I assume that's just my own little quirk. I'm actually stepping up the nicotine content, ordered 60mg unflavored and planning to cut down to 30-36mg with pure PG and try vaping that for a while, see what happens, as I noticed with the 18mg I only get one good buzz the whole day, the rest of the time I seem totally immune to the effects of the nicotine and just vape it because it's there.

Hmmm - I actually don't want a buzz... At least, not from vaping ;)

I have to drink more water, thats for sure. I also get a headache. Im not sure if its from withdrawl or from vaping 12 mg of nicotine. I am not sure if my nic level is too low or too high. Currently I am waiting on delivery of a higher level. I knew there was going to be a learning curve to vaping, I just didnt realize how big of a curve it was going to be lol.

Increase in monthly spend. Quickly building a collection of different juices to try (0-6mg of nic. Decrease in productivity at work due to reading reviews and the constant search for Mods but always too late and refuse to pay the huge mark up. And I find myself vaping in the house and no one seems to notice :)

As far as other side effects, no negative ones I've come across yet in my month of vaping. Quit cigarettes over a 1.5 years and haven't looked back.

I had a little bit of sore throat, but that went away quickly. I tried some 24 mg/ml juice when I first started and that was way to much for me. I got dizzy and swimmy headed. Luckily I had ordered a few different strengths, so I put the 24 aside and eventually just threw it out.

One other thing that happened to me was about 3 weeks to a month after quitting cigarettes and starting vaping, I got a little blue, or down. Not really depressed, but kind of lethargic and melancholy. I didn't really notice it much, but my husband did. A few times he asked me if maybe I should just smoke a cigarette. He perceived me as being unhappy, though I wasn't really unhappy exactly just not myself, hard to explain... This lasted about a month and I attribute it to getting off of something in the cigarettes that wasn't provided by ecigs. Not sure what, MAOIs maybe? Or maybe it was just a coincidence. I had zero desire for a cigarette, so I just waited it out and eventually got back to normal.

Vaping less than 1ml of 16mg strength juice per day is pretty darn close to vaping nothing.

Some people might beat around the bush, but after four years I don't do that so much any more.
It sounds to me like there was about a 99.67% chance your symptoms point to not getting enough nicotine.

But if you have powered through that then more power to you.
Keep it up if it is working for you.

A few days ago I probably would have told you that you need to vape a LOT more...

Update:

I am still vaping that same 16 mg menthol from 4EverEjuice (have to wait till I get paid to try the new stuff I ordered because I'm too scared to drip it into my one and only clearo!), but I am not getting the headaches any more as much (or the sleeplessness). Guess I got used to it?

I was unable to vape the Voda menthol with the higher VG ratio - not convinced that it's the VG that's making it unbearable though - might just be a crappy juice (as one other poster here mentioned, Voda is horrible!).

The fantastic thing is I'm 7 days in now with no analogs and I am really enjoying vaping - I mean... I LOVE it! Convert for life here folks, and zero desire to ever go back to a cigarette. This is a huge victory considering I haven't even found the right juice yet. I am ecstatic! I've not had any depression or irritability problems, and if I get a craving, the vaping totally satisfies it. This has been the best choice I've ever made for my health and I'm elated.

I want to send out a big thank you to everyone here who supported me with posts answering questions and providing encouragement. This is a great forum and you guys are changing lives.

I used to smoke 1 to 1 1/2 packs a day of Ultra Lights and I started vaping at 16 mg nic and did have withdrawals the first couple of days. I did overcome the withdrawals by luckily enjoying my vape but yes, my eyes were very glazy looking and my head felt like it was full of cotton for a couple of days. From that I think I started with too low a nic and had withdrawals. But there have been times I vaped alot and got over nic'd also. Mostly a slight nausea that lasts about 5 mins. And there were times mostly at first that I had chapped lips and didn't drink enough water. Even the edges of my nose became dry and I put cream on it. lol. But... I haven't smoked in over 2 years and I smoked 30 years and figured I would die smoking. I feel way way better and just love vaping so much. It made quitting smoking painless. But nowadays I got my juice figured out for what works good for me (which is 100% VG juices) and I no longer have those issues. There are a ton of angles for vaping that you just have to figure out for yourself. But most importantly, WE AREN'T SMOKING ANYMORE! :rickroll:

I do have to say finding the flavors you absolutely love and say, "OMG, this is so good", takes awhile. That's the 2nd or foremost important thing about vaping. No one wants to vape something that tastes like dirty socks or kitchen rag. Get small sample flavors from vendors to try. A bunch of them from all over. :)
