treehead, I've had no problems getting the Balvenie here in N.C., though it can be a challenge around the holidays. Some folks may consider it a little spendy at $66.00 a fifth(here in N.C.)but it's worth it to me. It's like a very smooth flavor explosion in your mouth with a little heat.

If you've never drank Scotch Whisky before I might suggest some Glenlivet 12yr to cut your teeth with...lol. Take your time and you can actually pick out the many flavors and undertones in scotch. You will also know if scotch is for you are not(some folks just don't like Scotch Whisky)at half the price of the Balvenie. I usually pour some in a short wide mouth glass, let it breath for 10 to 15 minutes, then enjoy. I also stick with the single malts, the blended scotches tastes like gasoline to me.

Scotch was a good catalyst for me to get into Cognacs. But to the introductory scotch drinker I would recommend something milder like Macallan, I find Glenlivet to be a bit more peaty on my palate which could be a turn off to someone getting into Whiskies.

As a major scotch drinker myself, who has a bottle literally of every Macallan including the new 15, and I have the Macallan ice sphere, I really suggest starting with Irish blends and moving into the single malts. Johnny Walker Blends? YUCK! Ill take a Macallan xx neat with a cup of room temperature water and a straw to drip any day.

The Macallan boutique, accessories for whisky lovers | The Macallan Ice Ball Maker, give your single malt the ice it deserves.
The sphere is absolutely amazing, a pricy investment, for the real scotch drinker who sometimes like ice.

First of all this Portwood 21 sure is good...lol.

I'm sure glad that I'm not a real scotch drinker. I would have to buy a $1000.00 special ice ball maker and a $25.00 magical Glencairn glass to enjoy it. That's the great thing about scotch though. so many ways to enjoy it. I prefer it country boy style...less the snobbery.

Haha absolutely but I think the snobby aspect lets you enjoy it more as a treat.
