Anybody Here Trying to Learn a New Language?

I'm trying to learn Russian with Duolingo.
Initially, I got a book from Amazon (no DVDs included) and managed to learn the Letters and how they sound.
I have a feeling though, that I may have chosen a Level on Duolingo that was a bit higher than I should have, lol, so I am thinking about scrapping what I've done so far and just starting over - idk, still deciding on that.
I am at the point that I can READ the words (not quickly though) but don't yet know 99.9% what they mean, lol.
Russian is a very unique Language - learning to roll the R is especially challenging but I am getting the hang of it.
I watch a LOT of Russian - language Videos on YouTube and I can identify certain words (only a few so far) while they are speaking.
When what they are saying starts to make sense to me I'll figure I'm getting it down.
I can swear pretty fluently in Russian though
I'm really excited...hopefully I can do Basic Conversation in like, I dunno...a couple years, lol

I tried and finally gave up*. At that time, Rosetta Stone was the gold standard. I did not at all care for the company and its policies/support, but the actual programs were excellent.

*The only way I might learn is by being dumped into a foreign country - sink or swim.

Oh lawd, if I was dumped into the middle of Russia at this point I would be in deep doo doo, especially since swearing is the only thing that I can do with any fluency, haha.
I had heard some really good things about Duolingo so I thought that I would try them.
Best part is that it is freeeand so far the Lessons seem pretty easy to follow, which is the reason I'm not sure I want to restart, even though one can use the Service an unlimited number of times.
Were you trying to learn Russian, or another Language?

Spanish. I actually got to the point where I could read novels in the language, but the ability has pretty much gone away.

Learning Spanish like Crazy was also excellent at that time. I didn't mention it because the company is limited to Spanish and one other romance language.

I get you there.
Where I'm at there probably isn't another Russian within 500+ Miles of me.
I'm concerned about retaining what I learn too.
I pretty much decided that I could speak to my Cat....he can't converse and won't understand but maybe talking to him will help me retain it, lol.
So cool that you were able to read Books in Spanish! Awesome!
